Is it possible to refill the steering rack without removing the rack from the car. It looks tight and I also believe there is a risk of loosing the spring if you remove the top cover. I assume you loose some of the fluid when the rack boot tears so thats why my question. Anyone have any tricks.

Just had the top cover off my 328. Slight leak, appears to be the lower cover. Just jack up the left front and remove the wheel (I also have the rotor removed for a brake upgrade job). With a 3/8" ratchet and deep 13 mm socket you can loosen the upper bolt, a 13 mm open end works on the lower bolt, be it a bit trickey. Undo both bolts and carefully lift off the cover making sure you don't lose any of the shims. The spring should stay in place and can be easily removed by hand simply by grabbing the top and lifting straight up.
I would like to drain and re-fill mine but no clue as to where to get the BP Energrease FGL.

    Good luck!!!!!

Alternatively you could take off a tie rod end, loosen the boot clamp on the rod and while holding it elevated, squirt oil in between the boot and the rod.

As to type of oil, its a plain old simple rack that is used in a Ford Cortina or some other simple British car, and not unlike any other manual rack put into a million other simple cars around the world. The owners manual for my 308 calls for 80W90 gear oil. I put straight 30W motor oil in mine. And any oil is better than no oil.
