Assembling the steering rack, and I can't thread the tie rod inner race on past about 1/2 way. They came off without too much trouble. Threads look OK, but I think I need to chase the threads, does anyone know the size of the tap & die I need to do this? Also, I think this rack may have had the spacers / shims on the pinion wrong, there is a spacer that was on the bottom of the pinion, looks like it should be on the top (splined side that pokes out) and the round shims should be between the end plate and the bearing? Mine was opposite... I'm going by pictures as I have not found an exploded diagram
I recently rebuilt my steering rack ('79 GTS) because the passenger side bushing had disintegrated. If I remember correctly, the spacers were on the bottom between the bearings and bottom plate. Not sure about the thread size.
Thanks for the reply, I think you are referring to the shims. Do you recall if the spacer (sort of a thick washer, but not very large diameter) goes on the pinion top or bottom? You can see it on image #26 here: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/mos...7602899521527/
That sounds right. Check out this page, it has images that should be helpful. It is from our Pantera friends but it is the same rack. About half way down they have photos of the pinion. Pantera Steering Rack
