    I've gone through a load of steering rack threads looking for some specifics for re-installing my rack; found a ton of threads about removal, rebuilding, and bushing materials (nylon vs brass vs delrin). HOWEVER, I have some unanswered questions I couldn't find answers to, which I think would be helpful to get posted for posterity:

    1) The factory diagram - attached here - isn't clear where the thin washer (looks like a shim) #17 goes. On the "passenger compartment side" between the mount and rubber bushing, or the "radiator side" between the lock nut and mount?

    2) Other posters advised torquing the rack to the mounts until it's "solid" with the spacers against the mount/washer. Anyone have actual tq spec, which isn't in the manual?

    3) In other threads, members have cautioned to also check the u-joints in the steering column, as "people never lubricate them." Are they supposed to get re-lubed, and with what? Mine don't look like they've ever been. Seems a bit daunting to undo all those bolt connections, which are properly aligned right at the moment, or risk getting grease on my shoe while driving.

    4) Several members mentioned sourcing polyurethane mount bushings, which I cannot seem to find anywhere. Ideas?

    #4. Delrin or acetal bushings as far as I know are not sold. I had some made (done easily by machine shop) using the diagram in this thread;

    #1. Just where it shows under the nut on top of all four bolt bushing inserts.

    #3. The u-joints have grease nipples to re-lubricate without disassembly. Lithium grease should suffice. I might recommend checking for any binding once you separate the rack. If there is some then lower the steering wheel to remove any binding.

    While you are in there you might want to replace another wear part. See my thread;

    You have the studs just can't see them

    I have read both good and not so good reviews on using brass for the passenger side rack bushing in the rack. I used the ones supplied by SP. I'm sure others will chime in but I gather some flexibility at this juncture is required so went with the rubber.

    Thanks. I realized the studs were coupling the rack mounting hardware and edited the post. But the frame mount runs somewhere between the spacer tube and the nut at the end, and it's not clear from that diagram whether they want the nut to have the washer under it, or for it to be on the other side of the frame mount with the rubber bushing/spacer tube against it.

    It's simple, washer under every nut and bolt head except the tie rod. Just be sure it's the correct washer.

    One last question, Rob et al: Did you lube the splines of the little rack shaft that connects to the column? I put assembly lube on it, but yesterday another owner chastised me for not using a more permanent grease. Should I re-do that?
