I have my steering wheel off to fix the leather peeling off of the back side of the spokes, but sice I have it off I'd like to fix the wheel's other problem, which is that it appears to be bent. The right side of the wheel is just a little bit farther away from the left, probably from the POs using it to get in and out of the car. Wasn't me, I haven't driven it enough to do it yet. Add to that that my right arm is a little shorter than my left and this makes the sensation for me a little worse. I haven't come up with a good way to fix this. I'd rather not torque the thing back into shape on the steering column, it just seems like too much abuse, but I haven't come up with another way.

    Any ideas?

I'm sure you will get some good responses here, but her is one approach that can be modified to suit...
Do you have access to a heavy metal plate like a milling machine table or a welding table?
If so, you could clamp/bolt the center of the wheel down (may have raise it on blocks to allow jack screw access) and use a jack screw setup to push the low area on the wheel back into shape.
There are other ways to protect the wheel, but one way would be to heat/stretch form a piece of PVC pipe. If you heat PVC pipe and pull it around a diameter it will stay; then you could cut it in half to put between wheel and jack screw.
