OK folks...I have the OEM carbon steering wheel with the very cool red stripe at 12 o’clock. Only issue is that it’s damaged! It has part of it (facing the driver, of course) nicked and missing. I thought I could deal w it but it’s bothering the heck out of me. Anyone have a viable (inexpensive) solution on how to fix it or replace it?

    Thanks!

Can you put a band aid on top of it?

Seriously though I agree you can use blue tape and touch up paint.

I agree. I would at least take a shot with the tape and paint. If it doesn't turn out to your satisfaction you could wait until winter and send it out to have the stripe redone. I did a stripe on a leather wheel but I did take it off to do it.

The repair could look worse than the damage. Leave it as a memento to a well driven Modena.

It is very difficult to tell from the photos but the first thing to determine is whether the stripe is above or below the clear. If you run your nail across the edge you will be able to tell if it is above or below. Depending on that here are your options:

    Stripe above the clear:
    - Re-paint the stripe using fine line tape, and an airbrush (removing the steering wheel first of course)
    - Wet sand the stripe away and re-polish the underlying clear to remove it totally
    - Get a strip of vinyl from a sign shop and re-apply the stripe with the seam somewhere you can't see it easily

Stripe below the clear (if this is the case it was like that from factory):
    - Accept it as part of the 'hand made' charm of the car
    - Wet sand the clear down to the stripe, re-paint the stripe, and re-clear that section of the wheel. This is a pretty specialized job and not for a first timer.
    - Again you have the option of vinyl

If it were my car I'd do the vinyl and forget about it. If well applied it will be perfect when viewed from most angles and any sign shop would give you a scrap of material for free so trying it won't cost anything but a little time.

Thank you for the detailed response!

I’m a first timer and would have to look up wet sanding. Haha. Vinyl it is

You must have chipped the clear on top as well. On mine the red tape is cleared over.

Should be under the clear. We can repair and refinish, give it the Italian stripes if you like.

Sounds like refinishing it in order...then don't wear rings when driving....

  18. id leave it as is rather than put a strip of tape on it.

You are correct, sir. It’s a chip right through the clear past the stripe.
