I'm assuming that you need to remove the steering wheel to get at the guts of the wipers/lights/turn signal mechanisms. I've removed the wheel but now I think I have to remove a large nut, flat with some notches in the sides. Do I need a special tool, and if so what is it called? Wouldn't hurt to ask what to torque it back down to also. Thanks
Yes, you got it right. The special tool is available, just search FChat and you will find some that made their own while other purchased it. I was lucky and borrowed it from a friend. The way I got the nut off, was put the steering wheel back on and have someone hold it while, with a ratchet and cheater bar, turn counter clockwise. Be careful because when it lets go, it lets go. So don't be pushing up towards the windshield. Pull down towards the seat (with you in it). The nut is a nylon locking type so it doesn't need to be tightened too much when going back on. I torqued mine by hand to about 25 ft LBS. Once the nut is off, you will need a wheel puller to pull the wheel hub off the shaft(you can leave the steering wheel attached). I used a cheap ($11) one but needed to get the right metric bolts that fit the hub. Once the hub is off, the column switch has two flathead screws holding it in. Remove those and the column switch is free. I had to cut the connectors off the wires under the dash because the connectors will not fit through the very small hole the wires are fed through. Take pictures along the way to remind you how things should go back on. There is little to screw up, but better safe than sorry.
Don't pull the knob off the end of the switch shaft or the spring and tiny ball will fly into oblivion! If you must, capture it in a Baggie or something Good Luck.
