A steering wheel for sale on eBay this week got me to thinking about steering wheels on classic cars. I have always loved steering wheels, I have one in every car and one on my desk.

Tomorrow on My Car Quest I write more about steering wheels.

Steering wheels are (were) an art. Older wood wheels are rarer. Old tyme wheels were of bakelite type material and upscale cars had the wood ones. Still I have 3 favorites. The classic American (copied from the italian) is certainly the 66 Shelby. then the 1964 Mercury Park-Lane wheel; a wonderful center cap with an inlaid chrome logo on a 3 spoke dished wheel, slick small chrome buttons on the spokes for the horn, the wheel rim is colour matched to the car's interior except for the upper third of the wheel which is clear lucite. Third one is a spin on the classic Italian wheel from the DeTomaso Mangusta wood wheel with leather wrapping at 9 and 3 o'clock.
