I see a big new stripe down the side of your P-51. Part of the revised Jelly Belly scheme?
your thoughts on the Rolls Royce "PR" that the UK built motor produced more HP then the same spec US motor?
Yep...old stickers about 5 years old. Put new stuff on just before Reno. Less jelly beans but gaudy ged stripes.....hell I'm just a whore.
The GM Allison is 1710 cubes and makes 12-1300 hp using a single stage impeller/blower thing and only 47" of manifold pressure. The Merlin is 1650 cubes and makes 15/1600hp with its 2 speed 2 stage blower pulling 61" mp. The GM deal was never intended to handle the high mp that the RR did. That extra manifold pressure must make the difference I suppose. SWITCHES could perhaps explain all the particulars if he is around. You there Bob????
Steve, unless I am mistaken I think he is asking about the difference between a Merlin built by RR and a Merlin built by Packard. Engines of the same spec. I heard many years ago there was some feeling the RR built motors were better. I always chalked it up to "It came from a foreign country so it must be better".
Oh......Oh yea. Sometimes I read readin but dont read the righiten. Thanks Brian. Absolutely no difference. US engines built with RR blueprints and to their specs. Some of the post war RR momos were stronger and made more hp. They are refered to at 'transport' engines. 500, 600, and 700 series were used in transport aircraft in the late 40's and 50's. Much better engine in all respects.
Based solely on seeing period RR and Packard auto engines apart I would not be surprised if Packard part and material quality was better. Packard used far better materials in their auto engines. And machine quality was superior. RR auto motors were still pretty Victorian.
