The rubber grip on the handbrake of my 550 (and on a 456) has become sticky. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution??????
I have the same problem but Ferrari doesn't sell that piece by itself. Maybe wait for a salvage part somewhere. Let us know if you find a solution.
This piece is actually rubber. That would be great if Robbie had a solution for this (he refinished all my plastic pieces) but I haven't heard of refinishing the rubber yet.
The solution is to replace the rubber handle with a Carbon Fiber one. M-Acarbon, one of the sponsors here, will be more than happy to supply you with one.
I would rather find a solution to keep the original piece. Carbon is not original. Maybe treating it with talcum powder????
Duane--Send it to me, I can knock it out with no problem. I have done at least 50 of them... The one end is rubber, but the handle itself is a hard plastic
Robbie can fix it. The handle is exactly the same plastic, with coating that gets sticky, as the rest of the interior components. There is a rubber plug on the end, but that is not the part that gets sticky. Taz Terry Phillips
The hand grip will come off, but it is a ***** and by the time you have it off it is pretty much ruined.
You could use "Plasti-Dip" spray on the handle after you took the old rubbery material off it with solvent or sanding it down. This spray makes it look and feel original again (but might get sticky again after a couple years, don't know yet, still awaiting... ).
Twist and pull, use a little spray like WD40 in there to help it. It is glued on, but will break free and pull off with enough muscle and coaxing...
I am fascinated by this. I thought that the prior owner had covered the steering column cover and handbrake in my 456 with some poor silicone gunk. It was sticky and had left black marks on the leather as well as hands touched both. I have removed it all after significant effort with Eucalyptus Oil. This has been non abrasive and also maintained the plastic as it oiled it at the same time. I did it 4 weeks ago and still looks good and no stickiness. Knighty
Another trick for removing would be to borrow one of your wife's rubber cloth sheets for opening jars. Allows you to get a really good grip without damaging the surface. Taz Terry Phillips
