I have recently purchase a '95 F355TB. This is my second Ferrari with the first one being a '77 308GTB. While I am obviously extremely pleased with the car (bought from Motorsports International - 10,300 miles), I have noticed that a lot of the switches, air vents, underneath the steering column, etc are very "sticky". Is this a sign of the rubberized material perrishing? The 308 was entirely different on the interior and did not have this problem. Is this something that can be changed or fixed at a reasonable price? I had thought that a carbon interior might work but it wouldn't cover all.
Anyway, I would appreciate any advice. Please let me add, I live in Arizona but do plan to spend the summers with the car in Pinetop (90 as a high) and then back for the winter to Phoenix. The car was from Vero Beach, FL. All leather does seem fine though. Does detailing with ArmourAll or wiping with alcohol help???
    Thanks!

congrats on the car she's a beaut.

the sticky is no big deal there are several ways to tackle the two most common being taking it out, oven-offing it and then plasti-dip.

or carbon fiber as you mentioned,

it has been discussed here many times and you well find a wealth and step by step instrutions if you type in sticky or gummy in the search box, good luck !!

Re the sticky goo problem on 348/355 consoles - this topic has been flogged to death but I'm still confused as to how to bring the console back to original. I've bought some Easy-Off oven cleaner in an aerosol can but I don't know what to do with it,
i.e. do I scrub the surface hard or steady and slow; how much Easy-Off do I use; do I scrubb then buff off; what should the original surface look like; any other hints?

I (and others I'm sure) would appreciate any constructive comments re the above frustrating problem.

let it sit about 15 mins, then wipe it off with a rag then repeat the whole process.

look at the thread I linked above......

Do you spray it on or can it be wiped on with a rag sprayed from the aerosol can ?

Spray it on and let the parts sit for at least 10 minutes in a tub. Then scrub with a stiff brush rinse and repeat. That will take off the gooey stuff and you will be left with a clean part that is ready to be re-coated. Its a messy job but it works. Also, I would get the low odor stuff unless your into that type of thing of course.

Thanx, but I intended leaving my console in the car to do the job. And what do you mean by "re-coated".

I wouldn't suggest that. You'll make one hell of a mess, and possibly get this crap on the leather. Remove the plastic panels and do it in the garage, kitchen, backyard, etc.

also, the Easy-Off" is VERY caustic. I suggest wearing rubber gloves as it will take all the oils out of your skin and give chemical burns.....ask me how I know .. :)

THe black rubberized gook that comes off the controls and such is something you don't want embeded in you carpeting either... Can be very messy.

not sure what the "easy-Off" will do to any electrical conntections and contacts that get exposed.. can't be good.

Spend the extra time needed for disassembly and reassembly, less costly in the long run to new carpeting and leather.

What is meant by "re-coated" is that some of us have used a rubberized spray called "Plasti-Dip" Great stuff fo getting back the tactile sensation of the soft touch feel and color of the original coating. It is also (so far) immune to the problems of the original. This is something you DONT want to do with the parts in situ in the car.

I've tried the Easy Off method and it completely screwed up my console. Perhaps I did something wrong. Based on my results, I would not recommend Easy Off.

Well, I thought I took a pretty conservative approach to try to clean it up. The first coat did a nice job but left minor indentations almost like the dimples on a golf ball. I thought well, perhaps i've not yet removed all of sticky layer, although it was starting to look better. I then proceeded to apply another application expecting to see improvement. After doing this several times, it never improved and just continued to get worse. If I had stopped after the first application of the Easy Off, and applied Plasti-Dip it still would have looked terrible.

In the end, after applying easy off a number of times, it remained sticky once dry.

Fortunately, I think the 348 console parts are a fair amount cheaper than the 355.

My 348 had this on the rubberized strips around the engine bay and the inside door handles.

I took the parts off, soaked them in lacquer thinner to strip the rubber off (took some elbow grease), then I re-sprayed the parts with rustoleum textured black paint from
    Wal-mart.

I swear it looked better than stock and was easy to do. The textured paint was very easy to work with - I did it in 10 minutes in my driveway one afternoon. I was shocked at how good the parts came out.

I took all my sticky parts off and "washed" them in a mud room sink with Easy Off. Which was well....not easy. All told, It took about two hours of scrubbing but all the goo came off. I then sanded all the parts with extra fine #200 grit to smooth-out any imperfections. Put three coats of Dutch-boy spray paint. (read about this stuff in another thread only found at K-mart of all places) Followed that with 3 coats of matte clear coat. All the parts look like new but not factory... and....thats just the point.
So I ordered an original ashtray assembly from Ricambi. I put it next to the one that I painted and it just looked right. It had that dull, rubbery, factory finish.

In the end I replaced that, and the plate where the gearshifter is. I will probably replace the tunnel plate last as it is a $300 part. Incidentally, I also used the Plasti Dip Spray for the door handles and the little triangle pieces at the foot of the windows which were also covered in sticky stuff (dont know the proper name for those) The Plasti Dip worked perfect for those!

Bottom line, IMHO you can clean and scrub all you want but if factory fressness is what you are after the only way to get it is replacement with OEM Ferrari plastic. Pricey but what about a ferrari isn't?

I used the easier method. Leave everything in the car, annd get a bottle of Goof Off 2 at Lowe's, and about 200 Qtips. Soak the Qtip in the Goof Off 2 and saturate the surface. It will liquify the goo, then wipe down with a rag. Repeat 2-3 times for complete sticky removal. No repainting, no reassembly, no problems yet after a little more than 15 months. For my 348 it took about 3-4 hours to complete.

It's a sign to replace it with carbon fiber pieces ;).

You're not alone alot of F355 owners have this problem.

There's alot of different approaches to fixing this problem:

Replace the interior with OE parts: This approach is VERY expensive unless you can find nice used parts for a good price.

Replace with Carbon Fiber Pieces: One thing alot of my F355 customers love is that although the car has some quirks, most quirks just lead to upgrades. Cracked Manifolds= NAPerformance Manifolds 17whp more, Bad Catalytic Converters= Hyperflows, etc.

Then there's the $65 "Delaney Fix" I know Daniel at Ricambi used to sell this, not sure if he still does, might want to check with him.

But here's a before and after picture posted by Dave showing his results, not bad at all for $65.00

    Before - http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134530181&postcount=185

    After - http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134530212&postcount=187

    Good luck either way.

some of you shouldnt attempt this as i have seen many "screw it yourselfers" out there make a mess ... if you dont consider yourself handy, have never painted anything ,never sanded anything to prepare for paint- you shouldnt think about doing it!
