I read some time ago on this forum about a recommendation to use oven cleaner to correct sticky dash buttons etc. Anyone know if this is correct, and if so, details on how to do it?
    Thanks.

Try a search on 'sticky oven' - from the many threads I think you should find enough information

Use regular polish used for the paint (the liquid type), works great.

I just took care of some sticky parts in the last couple of days and tried the following:

    Goo gone: no effect
    Oven cleaner: no effect
    lacquer thinner: no effect
    enamel thinner: no effect
    carb and choke cleaner: EFFECT

Pete, you mean to remove the old rubbery goo?

If so desired you can apply new after getting the old off... get some Plastidip in a spray can, works pretty well.

I would just send it to rob at Stickynomore. It's a mess to fix and he really just does such a nice job at a fair price.

Those of you who have used plastidip - can you get that stuff smooth?

I'm refinishing the dash in my vette and have experimented quite a bit and find no way to get it smooth like an OEM finish.

The best results I've found are by laying it on quite thick, which comes out 'good enough' but still not as smooth as I'd like.

    Any tricks you can share?

Also how's the long-term durability on parts that get touched a lot? I'm expecting that it will rub off more easily than the OEM finish.

It is quite tedious, but I tried a dozen or so different things recommended by people on FChat. The one that worked best was plain old isopropyl rubbing alcohol. It takes the sticky off without doing any damage to the plastic below or discoloring it.

I went through 1/4 bottle of the stuff and two boxes of Q-tips cleaning up all the parts on my 355, but it turned out great and they really didn't need to be refinished afterward. The underlying plastic is a nice black with a decent texture if you don't use overly harsh chemicals with it.

I did respray my steering column surround with a textured spray paint and liked that a lot, but it didn't seem appropriate for stuff like the AC vents or button trim. Good luck!
