Now this is really off topic, but...

Facebook has a feature where you basically play the real stock market with fake money. Now I'v always been interesting in the stock market and how it works, so of course I joined the group. You start with $10 mill in (fake) cash. Now here is my question

HOW IN GOD'S NAME DOES THIS THING WORK?

I am so, so very confused. I thought this would be easy, but I have no clue what I'm doing. Can someone please give me a rundown of how this works? I figure Microsoft and Yahoo are good, excelling companies, so I bought 20,000 shares of Yahoo and 10,000 in Microsoft. Any other good, soon-to-go-big companies? But, aside from buying those shares, I AM LOOOOST

    Thanks

I assume the "this" you are talking about is the stock market, not how the Facebook stock software works.

You can watch the "Mad Money" TV show on CNBC. Jim Cramer the host of the show goes through a number of stock picks every night.

It appears you bought Microsoft and Yahoo shares based on your "gut feel" of what would be good companies to own. Be advised that this type of emotional buying and selling of individual stocks is a recipe for financial immolation.

There are many sources of good stock picks out there. You can subscribe to newsletters, watch the buy/sell recommendations of the wall street analysts, and find a few mutual fund managers you respect and see what they are buying and selling.

IMO, the energy sector is probably a good place to be for the next few years. There should be record profits for anyone in the oil, gasoline, or natural gas business. Of course, some of that optimism is already reflected in their stock prices. Always evaluate the P/E Ratio of anything you are buying.

IMO, foreign stocks are also likely to outperform domestic ones in the next 2 - 5 years. The U.S. dollar is not looking that great given the trade deficit, the growing national debt, the war spending, future terrorism risks, and the election coming up.

    Good luck.

Ok, It's striaght forward. First what you do is buy some shares with your 10 million. Then you wait for 9AM until the stock opens. Your order wont' go through unless in real life the first trades take place on google or yahoo or whatever you put your order through.

Even after that, it takes 20min. They don't want real life bidders to cheat using Facebook's software. Now if you gain that's great. With your profit you can buy more stocks . If you lose, then you can put a sell order which will take another 20min to sell to another member on facebook.

Paper trading should be done with more realisting capital. I don't know about you, but $10m risk capital is just too rich for my blood personally. :D Granted, this is probably a "fun" site for playing around (I haven't seen it since I am at work) with stocks, but you won't learn anything unless you try to simulate real trading or investing with realistic starting capital ($50,000 and under for me).

There are better, serious paper trading apps out there, for stocks, options and Forex. Check those out. As for trading strategies, there are way too many things to cover here. I guess the subscribed business forum is a good place to start, but there are many resources available online for free.

This thing is pretty cool. As real as it gets, with fake money.

    1. You can start buying/selling from 9AM-4PM (Stock Hours in NYC) Everything afterwards is tickets that will go in effect the next day.

    2. You can bid on any stock out there, Worldwide - US.

    3. Prices are the same as they happen live. You buy apple and when your ticket is submitted, your shares will be at that price.

    4. Live profit manager, you see how you do as it happens.

    5. You can perform anything that you can do professionally. Cut short, cover, sell, buy.

    6. Lots of more cool things.

    Thanks everyone. One more question;

Buy and sell, kind of an easy one to figure out, but cut and short? Someone please explain what this does?

Google "sell short". There should be a ton of information out there without going into a lengthy explanation here.

"Cut short" is a term I've never heard.

    Get Out of a Position
If you have already Bought or Shorted shares of a company, and want that money back - you want to Get Out of the Position. To get out of a Buy Order, you Sell the shares. To get out of a Short Order, you Cover the shares.

Once you Sell or Cover shares of a company - your cash will be freely available for you to make other transactions and the value is no longer tied to the performance of of the company.

To Get Out of a Position go to the Make Trades page and click on the Get Out of Position. This is NOT the default selected tab when you go to the Make Trades page.

To Get Out of a Position - you are required to enter two things:
    • The Stock Ticker of the company you want to trade. Don't know the ticker? Search Here
    • The number of shares you wish to trade, between 1 and the number of shares you Bought or Shorted.

You can also optionally enter a limit price. What is the limit price?
    • On a Sell Order - the limit price is the minimum price you are willing to sell.
    • On a Cover Order - the limit price is the maximum price you are willing to Cover (buy back).

Then to place the order click either Sell or Cover- depending on what type of trade you want to place!
