Red Bull must be struggling to arrange alternative engines for 2017 onwards. :p "Wow, you know, these Renault engines are better than nothing..." :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I wonder if it's contractual? As part of resuming supply of engines to Red Bull for 2016, Renault specified "you are forbidden from saying anything negative about Renault engines. You must say one positive comment about the engines per race weekend."

    ;)

that would be the only way to have somebody say anything positive about this non-power-unit

    Ouch!

    A little harsh I feel! ;)

"At least they're out there trying" used to be the expression..... Again, it's hard, as it should be.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Some strange little voice is telling me that "this non-power unit" might have a surprise or two in hand for this season...

It seems they dont want to be associated with Vijay 'broke billionaire' Mallya and have developed ties to Red Bull. That makes them strong and good for F1 in my opinion.

He´s learnt an useful lesson in the case that he wants to change the engine in the future: it´s not pleasant to make a deal with a moaner.

So Aston's 'historic return' to F1 actually involved an existing team agreeing to simply stick their logo on the car so that they can keep Adrian Newey around?

Well that was a massive let down.

Indeed! But, on the other hand, I am not aware that A-M coffers are exactly bulging with cash?

Aston Martin had a works F-1 team in the 50's... not at all a success - with a driver called Jim Clark... but it really did not do much at all.

AM's involvement with RB is interesting. you are right its to keep Adrian Newey around and tied up, but also a way to expand RB into real cars... its nice to have the AM name around, and it cant help the car company... but it will be interesting to see what Newey comes up with in terms of road car? something like the car he did for Play station would be uber cool!

Anyone believes when Red Bull eventually get Honda engines too, Mclaren will have any chance of winning left? I think they're done until they start developing their own PUs and even then I doubt they'd be able to do better than even Honda

If RB genuinely wanted to get into 'real cars' wouldn't it have been better to do that with a company like Mercedes that makes their own parts/engines and have huge R&D budgets rather than a company that is over leveraged, has no money and is themselves going to Mercedes for parts and engines?

I doubt Aston have any real technology that can help Red Bull in F1. This deal seems to only be about RB giving up a small space on their car so that Newey sticks around. This cross technology talk is just nonsense.

    I don't think so...

Aston entered 5 GPs in the late 50s (59 and 60, I think), driven by Roy Salvadori, Carroll Shelby and Maurice Trintignant.

Jim Clark never drove for Aston Martin.

Whilst Jim Clark never drove for the Aston Martin racing team in any category, he did drive an Aston Martin DBR1/300 at Le Mans in 1960 & 1961 for the Border Reivers team.

Seems to me Jimmy would drive any ol' POS.... :)

He simply loved to drive fast!

Getting paid to do it!? Woot!... Who'd a thunk it!.... ;)

    A truly unique individual IMHO.

    RIP Jim,
    Ian

TBH, he was pretty much dedicated to Lotus.

Apparently, out of the car he was the most unassuming, well mannered, shy person you could ever want to meet who hated the fame that went with being an F1 driver.

Once in the car though, he was a true racing God! :)

    +1 on all points.

One of the Gods indeed. As a kid I watched him win a saloon car race in a Lotus Cortina, jump out and go & qualify in the F1 car. I want to say he put it on pole, but that may be the rose tinteds.... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian
