I keep reading how Enzo would have felt about how people drove his road cars. As I understand it, Enzo didn't give a flip about his road cars. He built them only to support his racing effort. Am I wrong here?

In other words, hell yes Ezo wanted you to drive the crap out of them so you'd come back and buy another. Oops, getting way O/T now... :)

Your point Use/Abuse is well taken. That said as Mr. Ferrari knew, and BTW that's why he stopped going to the races and stayed home near the telephone, in order to win you must abuse. That's one of the reasons I no longer race in anger. You're also correct about cleaning them up. To clean some of my cars they have to be completely taken apart which I do on a regular basis. The question that began this thread is: "If I don't have a garage should I still get a Ferrari?" I strongly feel one should. I realize that I'm very lucky to be able to do what I do, but even if I couldn't I'd own and use some sportscar to it's fullest. If I couldn't afford to do that I'd do the same with whatever I could afford a bike for example.

I like Jim's philosophy... sounds like someone without heart trouble from stressing out and has a lot of fun.

If it were a classic, I would say definitely garage first, but since it's a current F-car, I'd just say find a good awning or carcoon deal and think about something permanent later. It's not going to break immediately and hey, anything can be repainted!

There's 2 Porsche 996TT's and a CL 600 right around the corner from me that are open to the harsh Boston winter year round, and the 996's are parked on the city street!

I have lived in Michigan and had several cars drop exhaust systems on the ground while driving because of salt corrosion and I babied those cars as well, always washing, waxing, etc., spraying the undercarriage, got undercarriage sealant applied from factory etc. and it still happened.

    ---------

    That's not abuse....that's use....and proper care.....bad product design/execution is to blame.

That never happened to me with my Porsches however. (unwarranted cheap shot)

    Interesting thread.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. Thats like close to Canada 'ayy'.

I have daily drivers that spend everyday in the rain, dirt and snow. They run great as long as I do proper maintenance to them. They look good too, as long as I wash them on a regular basis, throw some wax on them, blow the moss out of the window channels and keep the air intakes clear of leaves. I make sure the drain holes in the bottom of the doors are clear so the doors don't fill up with water and rot from the inside out.

One of these vehicles is 18 years old and there is no rust and no leaks.

The biggest enemy to the 360 parked outside everyday is letting it sit in humid air without warming it up at least once a day. The moss will grow in the body seams and window channels if not covered up and the mold will grow on the interior, especially in the carpet.

I prefer to park my 308 indoors to help preserve it and to save myself time and effort cleaning all of the crap off of it. A drier atmosphere is easier on the organic elements of the car but I will drive it when I have some place to go regardless of the weather. It won't melt.

I drove my 308 numerous times this winter after recent snows and while hosing off the undercarriage this week I scooped a couple of small handfuls of gravel out of the forward control arms. How it got there I don't know but it didn't hurt the car and I will be driving it in the rain Saturday to run it on the dyno with the club.

My advice is to buy the best waterproof cover you can find and place dehumidifier 'pucks' in the car if it is going to sit. Even a small light will help the interior withstand the moisture.

This is just crazy to me... we are talking about taking a $150-200,000 car and parking it outside, with boxes of Arm and Hammer to ward off mold and mildew !! Amazing. IMHO

    Tifosi69....

Look at it this way......people park $100-150K+ high end SUV's outside as well as MB's and BMW's.......so it's a Ferrari or Porsche.......just like ryalex said........

If you go in and out of a heated garage everyday with your domestic or Japanese daily driver, in the climates like mine and Spasso's you are just asking for trouble.

Cars will sit on the docks for 30-60 days in Europe........30 days in Canada.....in railyards...etc...etc....on dealers lots.....

I guess being in the business jaded me a bit.........I wouldn't let the lack of a garage prevent me from getting an F-car however.

My opinion is you have insurance to cover theft. So evaluate your own neighbourhood to see how likely it is to get stolen. Get the usual alarms fitted and maybe a tracker system too. A friend recently had two cars stolen in one night and got one back because it had a tracker.

As for the weather. Well get yourself an outdoor car cover from Specialist Car covers. They are tailored to fit your car, and keep it away from the elements. Recently came 2nd in a test of outdoor covers. The winner had a baggy fit so was marginally better at releasing moisture. but even the mag admitted there was not much in it.

Dont worry about these things. Just buy the car and enjoy!
