I have a 348 spider and since I am going to change the clutch and its the same area of the car I was thinking of placing straight pipes (removing the cats). I would like your opinion if its worth it. Here are the pros and cons i have heard so far:

    PROS:
    power increase maybe 5hp
Noise level increase (although type of sound is not that appealing not that deep throated noise that you have with cats on)

    CONS:
smell of gas all over your clothes
    gas consumption increase 3 litres/100km
    distorts real ferrario noise
    Fails MOT inspection
    environmental enemy

I´m a bit divided. Can you give me your oipinion should I place the straight pipes?

I did it on my 348.

I never noted an increase of the gas consumtion.
The ferrari noise was better after than before

And the engine rev more freely.

    Hope it's help

Try it, you can always go back.

I have test pipes on my 355 and fitting them made a noticeable change in sound, mainly how loud it has become, but all in all I would not put the cats back in. Hard to say if there was a seat of the pants change in performance, but the sound alone is enough for me. Give it a try.

do your bit for the environment and leave the cats in. There will be less gas and noise pollution.

I had straight pipes on my 355 with an XOST exhaust and it sounded incredible.
I would recommend it in a heartbeat.....

Just as another datapoint....I have run 348's with stock cats, hollow stock cats, straight pipes. Even hollowed out the cats reduce the sound of straight pipes. There is turbulance in hollowed cats that I do not think is good. Regardless of what people say I think cats restrict performance and the reduce sound quality. That said you can regain sound quality by fiddling with your muffler set-up if you are running mufflers. To me the ultimate sound was no cats and challenge muffler as what you could buy over the counter so to speak. For total DIY the ultimate sound was no cats, straight pipes, hole in the bumper, 2 IMCA modified race mufflers through bumper I did on the racecar. That way I got just a bit of sound reduction, lightest possible exhaust system, most heat rejection. That was amazing but you can't run open pipes on the street. This set-up was so loud you could not even run on some race tracks! For total street I still run cats in my 550M. The couple HP you loose, heat you retain, hassle with smog police, and the smell of fuel on your cloths just is not worth it. You could easily regain good sound by just keeping cats and doing a tubi, larini, cappy etc... Sorry for crappy picture.

Basicly your engine will work much better (and less change for nice cat fire...) and SOUNDS better with straight pipes. I have straight pipes with Tubi and sounds lot better than with cats. (and better than with Hyperflows)
ONLY negative things: smell more and it might fail MOT depends where you live.
But it will give so many positive things that they greatly outweight negatives.

Forgot to mention the reduction of heat in the engine bay. That alone is enough to make the change have a very positive effect on your car....

I just changed my exhaust today. I have Goths cat's and made a muffler less systems. The sound is awesome, not over bearing at ideal but sounds great at wide open throttle. I did a 90 out of the cats into a x pipe, then 90 back out.. Very inexpensive way to get an awesome sound system (<300) plus cats.

you will not notice any performance difference going straight pipe (cat bypass) unless you cats are bad
you will notice a slight db increase (not worth the price of test pipes)
you will have to put the cats back on to pass emission

are straight pipes the same wherever you buy them or do they vary?
I say this because I see a bit of difference in prices by looking at 3 suppliers, just wondered if all are made of stainless steel or they vary hence the price differences (from 270 UKpounds at superformance to 160UK pounds at eurospares).

I have an '89 model car, and added cats and closed loop O2 to get rid of smell. The O2 going closed loop reduced my fuel consumption and the plugs exhaust looks more grey than black now (probably over rich). Engine runs smoother too. I made a custom set (cost me USD 375 each) of cats using Magnaflow 200 CEL metallic core sport cats and part of my straight factory pipes. The dyno before and after showed no (within the 2% error margin as it was higher after I put the cats in) difference in performance.

    sure you can ask..

The xpipe promotes improved scavenging effects by smoothing out uneven exhaust pulses from the engines firing order. It also helps quiet down the exhaust, resulting in a mellower, less raspy tone. . This laminar flowing gas is much quieter than tumbling gas, resulting in an exhaust tone about 8 db quieter.

In simple terms it sound much better.

+1 ............... yes ........... the x-pipe does help scavenging, smooth out the pulses and if it is merged nicely can add a few HP .................. glad to hear your running ............. :)!!

Ferrari does not have uneven exhaust pulses. They are tuned. Flat crank motor.

Sorry my oversight, I am not working on my 70 Z28. The bottom line is an xpipe produces a different exhaust note. You still need to tune your exhaust to get the sound you desire. I will work on a sound clip.

Are the straight pipes for the 348 the same as the ones for the 355? someone is trying to sell me 355 straight pipes and says they are probably the same, although he´s not 100% sure.
