    Hi there,

when the engine is cold I got a very strange metallic rattle. It sounds more like something is loose but I cant see anything from brief look. When the engine gets warm the rattle goes away. I am somehow not comfortable with that noise...

Could you please listen and lemme know if thats normal? Unfortunately the video quality is not that good but around second 0:06, 0:16 and 0:26 you can hear it pretty well

    Thanks,

    Max

I had the same rattle on my 95 355. It was a lose exhaust shield. When it got warm and the metal expanded it went away (mostly)

I heard the same thing on my 348 when it was cold, and it disappeared after 2 minutes once the engine warmed up. I posted this exact question some months ago.

Fellow F chatter Miltonian had the correct answer:

"If you're new to the car, what you are describing as a "rattle" may be the sound of the exhaust air injection system, which IS a part of the emission control design, and IS in operation for a short time while the engine is warming up.

One way to tell, start the engine when cold and listen in the area of the air intake ducts, by the rear quarter windows. If the noise is most noticeable in this area, it's just the "pulsations" that are part of the system, as fresh air is drawn through the one-way valves on the exhaust manifolds."
