I have a strange noise coming from the drivers side rear wheel on my F12 (UK RHD car). When turning sharp left at low speeds, there is an intermittent grinding/knocking noise. It's not loud. I thought maybe it was a stone We've had the car up on a ramp and there's no obvious signs of marks on the disk - so not that and nothing seems loose. Although there's loads of shrouds etc round the rear wheel so difficult to see anything else. There's been no obvious constant whine, so I have discounted wheel bearing (for now). Any ideas? It's in for a service next week so I will get them to take a look.
Could it be the “cage” that connects the half shafts to the rear wheels? Its supposed to be a life time part, but if its got any kind of leak/ damage/ it can lose fluid and this could be a sound that would be generated from such a circumstance. Good that it’s going into the dealer next week. These things never get better on their own and with so many parts of the car covered up by panels, it’s hard to know. Thanks. I suspected/dreaded something transmission related. It has the Ferrari warranty so will see what they say. Will post on here once we find out what it is.
So its been with the dealer for nearly 2 weeks and Ferrari have also been involved. Gearbox oil flush as a precaution, not showing any signs of damage. Noise still there. They've had chassis mics on and the noise seems to be coming from the bearing or half-shaft and not the gearbox or diff but it's not conclusive that its either. The plan is leave it for now and see if it gets any worse so they can diagnose it better. Good job its still under warranty...
Update from the dealer, a seal in the box moved out of position and the pressure build up was such that it blew a hole in the gearbox casing. All covered under warranty - good job I renewed it as it's a £20K job!
It seems I have the same noise, could you confirm please. It comes from the rear right but is noisy turning left or right at under 25 miles
Mine was a similar noise from the rear right at low speeds when turning sharp left only. It was not as frequent as yours sounds - mine was occasional and very difficult to replicate. Yours sounds much more like something rattling. Could be the same issue though - hope you still have it on warranty.
I still have it on the warranty until next of April 2025 A former Ferrari mechanic will test it at the end of the month to check that something does not rub before sending it to the Ferrari workshop, he has already replaced a left gimbal which was worn. How many miles did you drive before breaking the gearbox after that the strange noise begin ?
Mine is only 40K kms or 25 K Milers. What I want to know is the miles you run after detecting the strange noise, and the moment you break the gear box. It could help me to prevent the breaking before going to Ferrari.
I bought mine with 17K miles on it. I always thought there was a slight wine from the rear right of the car in amongst the general noise of the transmission - even from when I picked it up. I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but also thought it could just be a normal noise from the transmission as it is a transaxle. I may have just been oversensitive. It went through numerous services and nothing was ever picked up by the service department. The car picked up its knocking noise at about 39k miles - which is when we did the gearbox flush etc - and eventually failed at about 44.5K. I can still hear the transmission obviously - but I am cannot remember/tell if the same slight whine is there from when I first bought it.
The mechanic heard a terrible noise coming from the gearbox, I'm waiting for the return to take out the warranty
