I recently got a driver. In general, there were no obvious signs of paint work as I had seen on other cars. The paint in general shows age. But, there is something at the rear left lower panel and only there. I have attached a photo. What's under the paint there appears to be orange. In the bay is what appears to be the original paint foil with no name and no. 100-R-190 in script. What am I seeing?

    Thanks,
    Seamus

Looks like its been repaired and painted before.
You may find the centre of the bumper has been done, but when they prepair the rest, its just a quick flat and paint over.
Hence the small stones and dust flicked up from the tyre will blast the paint off.

This is a very common site on many normal cars if you look close enough.

To rectify the problem the bumper would require a full repaint, but with a lot more prep time.

As far as the paint difference under the top coat, who knows? the bumper could have come from another car at some time in its life.

Looks like it might be a 328 from the photo (?) Not much to go on, but look for the original paint code label if it's still there (under the rear deck lid, over the zippered boot area).

To me, it looks like an orange car was repainted red.

"100-R-190" doesn't sound like a Ferrari paint code to me. If you have the VIN, you might be able to go through the Ferrari Owners site (link in the sponsors section on this site) to find out the original paint code and options.

Mine has the same in some areas- looks like an orange primer/filler for fiberglass pieces. Anywhere my fiberglass front spoiler is scraped on the bottom, orange is coming through.

The photo looks norman to me.

Here is a photo of the bottom of my car (308) showing the scrapes. The body of my car is red.

If you only find it on fiberglass parts it may be a gel coat. Does it look fairly thick?

It's an orange primer, as noted, on all the 'glass parts...no worries.

Register at the factory Owner's site and they'll tell you your original color codes

You just need a little touch up on both the exterior red and the rough coating of the wheelwell, which is black.....

It's only on the LH 'cause that's where the gravel is! Unless you go off the wrong side of the road a lot.....

Thanks, these last few replies were just the ones I was looking for :).

I finally got registered on that site. It lists the color as Rosso chiaro 20-R-190. The little silver foil in my engine bay seems original and the writing is certainly EYE-talian / Euro style. It is pretty clearly 99-R-190. The car looks "plain" red to me.

    Very nice looking, congrats!

It's ok, all the lower glass parts will show orange when chipped...

Ahhh, a driver! It's nice to see one that looks just like mine. My car is white and looks exactly like this from below.

I agree that may of just ran thru something. A painter would have to be drunk out of his mind to make this kind of mistake.

    Yellow primer on mine, Bubba!

Yes, Seamus, as already mentioned, nothing to worry about. Touch up those areas where the primer is showing through and go out and get some more road rash.

Congratulations and drive it in good health, Seamus!
