I went to open my hood last night and pulling on the lever didn't do anything. It's been fine until now. So I gently lifted up on the hood while pulling the lever and it opened. Then I shut the hood, lowering it and gently pressing on each corner, and it latched, but stays loose. When it's latched you can lift up on each corner and it comes up maybe 1/4" inch but stays locked. If I try to pull the lever again I still need to gently lift up on the hood for the latches to unlock.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it normal for the hood to be "loose" when locked? I would think on a bumpy road it would rattle up and down. The latches appear to open and close correctly when playing with them with the hood open, but don't function properly when opening and closing the hood. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It sounds like you need to adjust the latch rings on the hood. My hood is firmly in place when closed and pops up a 1/4" when I pull the release.

Strange that it would all the sudden come out of adjustment though when I've opened it 50 times and its worked fine. Maybe because it slammed shut once last night due to weak shocks?

Make sure you have the emergency straps so you can make sure you can activate the opener 2 ways. Then do the proper adjustments.

The latch rings on the hood could be lose and therefore backing out each time you shut it. Getting more and more out of adjustment each time.

    FBB,
I'm aware of the emerg. release, but what are the emer. straps?

Before making any adjustments, I would check to make absolutely sure that both of the emergency release cable handles are pushed ALL the way in. Sometimes they won't return 100% by themselves if you use them and then just let go of the handle.

I guess I should ask: are you aware that there are emergency release handles/cables under each side of the dashboard?

Everything is tight on the car so I'd be surprised if it suddenly came out of adjustment. I think there's some problem with the latch or the cable. It's both sides so they would have both had to go out at the same time.

"Milt", I for one was not aware of the second handle. As I 'remember' the OM only shows the one on the right of the car. (And, of course, that would be locked in the trunk anyway.)

I sold my 348 years ago, so I don't remember EXACTLY where the backup release cable handles are located, but I'm sure there are two of them, one under each side of the dash, one for each of the latches. The parts book shows only one of these cables in the illustration (Tav 116, cable #17, handle #20), but the description lists one of these for the left, and one for the right, with different part numbers. These are NOT "locked in the trunk", they're under the dashboard.

Issue was I had the front carpet out and the rubber weather strip was not installed to push the hood up against the latch.

For the front Hood, the owners manual in mine only shows 1 emergency release pull handle under the dash. When I pulled it only one corner was popped up. Out of interest I searched under the dash on the opposite side and found a 2nd emergency release pull handle which released the other corner. It was hidden behind the carpet.
Not sure about anyone else but my engine emergency release handle is behind the seat inside the cabin which is not as shown in the manual.
