I had to get into the driver's door Sunday because the window quit going all the way up. It had simply fallen out of the track due to a nut that had backed off at the bottom of the track. While I was in there, I noticed that the metal piece that runs along the bottom of the glass is badly rusted.

The strange thing is that there's no rust inside the door, nor on the lift mechanism itself. The weatherstripping is fine, and when I did my passenger side last year it doesn't look anything like this.

Any ideas? It's not currently a problem, but I can't figure out why it would be rusted unless it came out of another car at some point?

Rust on an Italian car? What blasphemy. Show us some pics, maybe we can come up with a theory.

Both of my Dino windows suffered the same malady.

Who'd a thunk the windows on an old Ferrari would leak, and that the water doesn't drain well.

Grab a set from Ferrari UK, hang on to them for the next time you want to commit repair hari-kari on the doors.

Could be the obvious - water seeps down window, passes the imperfect weatherstrip seal at the top of the door, adheres to the metal strip.

Or it could be condensation, the way moisture condenses on a metal window frame in a house as the glass gets warmed (my science may be off here...)

Most likely the weatherstripping. I was simply surprised to see rust in there, when the rest of the car is rot-free.

I'm going to have to replace that piece,as one of the two bolts holding the window to the lift has sheared off. The fun part will be removing that chunk of rusted steel from the glass without shattering the window.

That's a winter project, unless it forces my hand by shearing the other bolt.
