Strange squeal at cold startup, at 1300 rpm...It goes away after third start. Any ideas? aux belts are less than a year on car
after waited 4 hours for engine to cool down, frequency is 102 HZ for water pump belt, should be 120-130 hz frequency is 116 HZ for AC belt, should be 160-170 hz these are DAYCO belts from AW Italian, should I replace with Ferrari labeled from Ricambi, or should I retension?
While you may ultimately need to replace a belt anyway, I'd more likely suspect the tensioner pulley - 172537.
Hi Steve, A $10.00 can of CRC Belt Ease is a cheap way to point to or eliminate the belts as a cause. Spray it on, if the squeal continues it's not the belts. Can't hurt https://www.crcindustries.com/belt-conditioner-7-5-wt-oz/
sprayed on ac belt and squeal is not there. I will wait a few hours and try agin to be sure funny that the squeal only lasts a few seconds
As belts wear in their effective I.D. increases just a bit, sometimes enough to squeal. Maybe just needs a slight adjustment. I'd be surprised if the Belt Ease didn't cure the squeal.
Sometimes it will come back 1000s of miles later. I have used a puff of wd40 that will stop squeal but not make belt slippery. I have used toothpaste. I have never used "belt dressing" just because other stuff works too but belt dressing is for this job
In my opinion belt dressing just hides an underlying problem. Id properly tension the belts and see what happens. And Dayco belts are Dayco belts whether it also says Ferrari or not.
The specification is actually pretty carefully determined to be sure the belts do not slip and not put more than required load on the bearings. If you think guesswork will achieve a better outcome, knock yourself out.
Okay, thanks I will retention to spec frequency for water pump belt, 120-130 hz frequency for AC belt, 160-170 hz
