    Hello again Guys,

I removed a bottom metal panel approx. 2’ x 8” from under the front end of my 79 308GTB, I found that the top of the panel (facing the spare tire side), was covered in grease. As I looked up into the cavity, I can see the steering rack is seeping /leaking.

The steering gear appears to be working. Anyone recommend a rebuild?

    Thanks for the advice guys!

    Chris

Don't know much about front ends, but it sounds like you have a leaky seal. If it were me, I'd replace the seal and while I was at it, I'd take a look to see what else needs replacement.

Chris I had my steering rack rebuilt just recently in my 74 GT4 and it made a world of difference to the steering precision. It wasn't leaking oil butt the passenger side bush was worn which is the case on most of the steering racks of the day.Not very expensive to have rebuilt budget around the $300-400 mark although I removed and refitted the rack myself.Removal is prety easy but refitting takes a bit more patience as you have to make sure the rack is aligned to the steering column

I've been checking out some of the threads on the subject and it appears that the boots are know to give out around 50K or sooner and then the grease shows up. The outside bushing on the passenger side wears out at about the same time. Jack up the right side of the car until the wheel is off the ground and grab the tire with both hands at 3 & 9 oclock. Wiggle Lt and Rt. If there is play look at the tierod as it goes into the steering assembly and see if it goes up and down. If so the bushing is probable worn. It may go in and out a slight bit but that is most likely ok. On my 79 (50K) there was about 3/4" to 1" movement of the wheel Lt & Rt and a lot of play on the tierod. I plan to send it out for a rebuild unless it looks like the bush, seal, and boots can be replaced and everything else is OK. Check the search function as there are several good posts that are very informative. Good luck.
