Sounds nasty if a zpack wouldn't touch it I'm getting a little scared of resistant strep strains. :(

Honey, lemon, whisky and tea usually works to calm the pain for me but this does nothing to get rid of the bug that is causing the problem in the first place.

My mom used to make me hot lemonade when I was a kid, this seemed to work but I am not sure that she wasn't slipping a 'mickey' in there as it always seeme to make me rather sleepy.

Once in a while i will get strep throat sooo bad that I couldn't talk or eat or even drink because it was so painfull.

They sellover the counter ansetic for strep, its a spray iam not sure whats the brand of it but it really works for me.

Things to avoid should be anything cold especially ice water.

Sorry, I don't know the remedies.
But, this is probably the 10th time I have heard strep throat is going around.
Seems like everyone I know has had it in the last few months.

I don't ever recall so many people having the same condition.

Hope your friend beats this fast. I know it's not fun

Zithromax has always worked wonders for me. Although it's similar to other antibiotics, it's much easier to take than other. I believe it goes liek this: 2 pills on Day 1, then 1 pill each day for the next 3 (or 4?) days. After that it keeps working by itself for the next several days.

Amoxicillin/Zithromax are the only antbiotics I recall using. And they always work for any bacterial infection I get.
BTW, has your friend tried any throat gargles that numb the throat to ease the pain and discomfort?

Has anyone made a documented diagnosis?

I would wonder if its not actually strep with that history.

No antibiotics will help the more common viral sore throats.

Azithromycin = Zithromax = 'Z-Pac'...they are all different brand names for the same drug

Said he took it and it didn't work.

I knew Amox. and Zithro contained the same active ingredients, but I had no idea what "Z-Pac" was.

Perhaps he should go to the doc again and express his concerns?

A couple doses of EtOH in an hour will probably help dull the pain for a while. :)

Put 3-4 teaspoons of table salt in a glass of water that is as hot as you can stand it.

    Gargle for 30 seconds at a time......4-5 times......repeat 4-5 times a day.

Been doing this for decades whenever it happens....and it works like a charm.

This will kill the burning and rawness you feel. Meds will do the rest.

+1 Your friend should have a rapid strep test or a throat culture. Rare for Strep to not respond to the ABX listed--viral is a good possibility (and the ABX won't do squat for that).

    Azithromycin=Zithromax=Z-pack

Amoxicillin is a totally different class of ABX

Antibiotics take time and evetually it will go away. What I use religiously when I get a sore throat is Apple Cider Vinegar, I know it sounds terrible but TRUST me it works. Mix 3 tablespoons of vinegar in a glass of warm/hot water. Gargle half and drink the rest, you will have relief almost instantly. Vinegar works to clean all the crap and bactieria that is in your throat. I caught a cold last week and used vinegar for my throat....in 1 day I felt good as new. It takes a little getting used to but trust me.....it works.

99% of pharyngitis is viral. Strep usually, though not always:

    1) Has a high fever
    2) White coating on tonsils
    3) Has significant lymphadenopathy of the neck
    4) No cough

Rapid strep test 97% sensitive, culture close to 100%.

This might me viral, or mono, etc.

    What did the culture show?

PS: Just because a ST is very painful, means zilch. It doesn't imply strep.

    Take tylenol, alternating with ibuprofen.

Note that this is vety generic advice, as I don't know your freind - best bet, call his doc.

Nice. My recommendation is Vi-Q-Tuss... I got some of that a while back when I had pneumonia. It's basically Robotussin with Vicodin in it. Requires a prescription of course, but if your throat is hurting and you take a spoonful of that, you'll be doin just fine :)

There is always vancomycin. If your friend's doc prescribes that, run like the wind away from him. That would mean the strep is resistant to just about every drug known to modern man. Instant strep tests are used in the office. Like others said, a throat culture would be needed to correctly determine the bacteria if not strep.
An antibiotic needs to be taken EXACTLY as prescribed until the bottle is empty. Mostly patients take an antibiotic for a couple days & stop when they feel better. That is when resistant strains develop. Did your friend not take his pills on time until gone?
Salt water gargle & chicken soup is good to complement medical science. I’m also a fan of sipping a thick, sweet liquor from time to time. Also, drink lots of water to stay well hydrated & flush your body.

If it was a case of MRSA the doc would admit this person to the nearest hospital, I don't think that they dole out Vancomycin at the local pharmicist. :)

+1 to the 'take the whole bottle' when you are dealing with antiobiotics. Used to be that there were hardly any cases of MRSA in the US now it's getting more and more common. When VRSA gets here, we're screwed.

You might be surprised. Cipro is given like candy (best for treatment of anthrax). We see VRSA every day in the ICUs. I've photographed "flesh-eating" wounds numerous times. The patients are in isolation & I put on a gown, gloves, TB mask, etc to enter the room & never touch anything. You can't even imagine the horror unless you are a doctor. Huge slabs of infected meat exposed that have to be cut & scraped daily. Most patients die.

Vancoymycin can be dispensed outpatient from a community pharmacy, only in ORAL form of course. Granted, you would never use Vanco for a strep throat because your concentration from the oral dosage form would never be sufficient. Oral vanco is only used for resistant C diff, enterococci, etc. (GI BUGS)

I doubt your going to get any Vanco.

Unless cultures come back indicating the need for it and the need for her to be treated inpatient.

The rate of upper respiratory bugs being resistant to macrolides is increasing (ZITHROMAX, LEVAQUIN, ETC). Sometimes the old school pens liek Amox can do the trick.

Hope it works out for her. I hate sore throats.

    Sorry, too many stouts today.

Levaquin isnt in the same class as zithromax as i mentioned above.
Clindamycin is another example of a macrolide.
