Anybody have any experience with repairing of a stripped sump plug. The plug is poorly designed and the thread relief is so long that full thread engagement is not achieved when the plug is fully engaged in its threaded (female) hole).

I already have the sump cover removed, but the plug size is large a 22mmx 1.5mm thread. So a helicoil will probably be hard to find. I am thinking of welding or JB epoxying a "insert" with a smaller generic oil sump plug to fit inside of it.

Ended up drilling and tapping the stock brass sump plug 3/8" NPT and JB epoxy welding the original sump plug back into the cast aluminum sump cover (with the stripped M22 thread). The 3/8" NPT thread fits perfectly into the "dimple" of the sump plug. Will use a 3/8" NPT pipe plug with an internal socket head hex, for a clean installation.
