Stripped Threads In Aluminum Pan

    While I was changing the oil in my Diablo I noticed the drain plug was very tight and upon removal of the plug I could see the threads in the steel plug loaded up with aluminum from the threads in the oil pan. I cleaned everything up and tried screwing the plug back in but it would not tighten and I could feel it pulling more threads. Sure enough I pulled it back out and more threads were torn off and 75% of the threads were missing in the oil pan.

    I have 2 questions. Number 1, is pulling off the bottom pan as simple as removing the bolts and dropping it down? Number 2, what would you recommend to be the best way fix this problem?

    This is really unfortunate because we were going on an exotic car cruise this week. I do have 3 days before we leave so maybe I can get it fixed but it's doubtful.

    Please chime in with any thoughts you might have on this.

  2. I would re tap ( or rethread) to a larger size drain plug.

    Pretty easy to remove the pan. Tap it to an appropriate oversize and put it back with a new plug and gasket.

    Don't overtighten it again. ;)

    Thanks for the pic.

    The pan is off and I will have it fixed in the morning. I own a machine shop so my options are wide open but I wanted to check just incase Lambo had some sort of solution. The plug's thread was damaged by someone dropping it and putting a dent in the first thread. I'm sure the plug went in hard all the way as it was tearing the threads but they just kept on going anyways.

    Any ideas what the torque/torque pattern would be for these bolts?

    Another option would be to retap and install a proper size helicoil. This could actually be a stronger solution for the future with the same size oil drain plug. I have done this on an oil pan before (actually a Volkswagen oil pan) with good results and no leaks. Just food for thought! Good luck!
