I've decided to take the plunge and go for a full repaint on my 348. The paint is "tired", chipped, scratched, redone in some areas, matt on the engine lid, etc., etc.

I'm now looking to suck the experts dry for their knowledge on what to strip and what not. I've arranged with the paint shop that I'll do the disassembly/reassembly. It's a bit cheaper that way, but the decision is mainly because I prefer to work on my car myself.

The idea is to strip down as much as possible but not go crazy. The front screen will be left in and the shop say that they have devices and media to pull the rubber away from the frame during painting.

I've been doing car maintenance/repair/restoration for 25 years but would be grateful for any F348 specific tips you might like to give me:

    - any general recommendations on what to remove and what not to touch ('cos damned expensive etc.)
    - are there any particular hidden fasteners waiting to snap off?
    - what's the best way to get the headlamp pod housings out?
    - can the rear screen be removed or is it best left alone?
    - what's the best way to remove the side window waist rubber seals?
    - what should I do with the engine deck lid louvres? - leave them and just buff them up a bit?
    - should I remove trunk and engine deck lid or are they a pain to get re-installed and aligned again?

The sort of things I'm looking for are like drilling out the rivets to get at the retaining nuts for the trunk intake louvres and little hints like that.

In return, I can only offer grateful thanks and that I'll post pics of all stages and hidden captive nuts etc. to help others in future.

Good luck with the project! I think the rear deck is easily reinstalled. I would definitely repaint the louver portion. The factory paint is very weak on the louvers on my 348 and is one of the few problem areas I have. What is the planned paint (metallic / clear coat, factory color, etc...). Sorry I have not useful hints for you. I am sure Ernie / FBB will chime in with some good info.

I pulled all my bumpers, hood, headlights, trunk, doors. On the hood you need to drill out the rivets for the air intake to be able to remove the front hood grill, everything else is pretty straight forward. Headlights come out easy, just remember which spacers go where. Front window can stay, rear window is better to pull out. Mine was a solid red so the parts didnt matter if they were painted seperate, with yours being a metallic, and if your wanting a showcar quality then you need to simulate the same position of the parts as they would be on the car.

Point well made regarding metallic. It's why I'm not planning to remove the doors. Do the headlight pods undo from inside the trunk?

Thanks for the tip on the spacers. Any trick to getting the rear screen out?

Nice to know I'm not alone on this re-paint ;)

    Raising this old thread because;
    1. Drew (the OP) asks some great questions regarding paint-prep procedures
    2. Eleven years later the 348 is becoming ripe for restoration, DIY or otherwise.
Adding, what paint is best for the tail light louvers (what I was looking for and found this thread) and other matt/satin black areas throughout the car?
