I have a rather arcane question that is probably of no concern to virtually anyone at this point. But are the ball joints on the 348 decklid struts supposed to be gold CAD or a black phosphate? The ones presently on the car (the struts have been previously replaced) are gold and the replacement OEM parts received from a Recambi are black phosphate. I am the original owner of this car, and I've tried to examine week one photographs and they appear to be the gold CAD. Anyone know for sure? The car in question is a 92.

They were originally cad or zinc and are now black. For cost and environmental reasons many plating processes are going the way of the dinosaur.

Thanks that's what I thought. In fact I think I recall the last time I took the ball/stud off the replacement part and used the existing ones.

Interesting. I've had 2 348s since 2002 and all struts I ever saw or replaced them with were black. I like the idea of cadmium plating though. I think that's the same finish as the deck latches.

348 was already an old car in 02. I bet they had already been replaced at least once.
