Here's a weird one, I tightened up my petrol (gas) filler cap on the 355, but, I am unable to unscrew it. It seems stuck fast ! I know that the fuel system is under pressure, so, is there a way to be able to release the pressure? I'm considering attempting to heat the cap up with a hairdryer to see if that helps.

    Any ideas / tips ?

Try and get a better grip on it. I've had a little trouble with this too. When I did get it moving I was surprised by the amount of pressure released.

I just used two hands and worked it....

I've tried two hands and two feet as well ! ! ! I'm no 7 stone weakling, but, my lord, tighter than my bank balance. I've had this in the past as well, but, after a few days left in the garage, the cap came off no prob. Strange one, I'll get cracking with the hair dryer and see if that works. . .

Out here in hot Texas, I too found that the gas cap gets tighter over time. Therefore I don't really tighten it very much when I put the cap on after refilling.

Push down on the cap as you try to unscrew it. The pressure in the system will hold it tight against the cap threads, and putting about 20 pounds of pressure as you try to unscrew it works for me. You can also give it a shot of penetrating oil to loosen it up a bit.

I just had this happen to me too. I used the rubber bib or a rubber jar opener to get it off.

This can happen if the O ring inside the cap comes off. Then you have metal on metal and it sticks like hell. If you can get to a piece of wood then tap it with a hammer using the wood on the cap lugs won't leave a mark. If it happens at a gas station you can take your belt off and wrap it around like a wrench to give extra grip.

    Hope this helps.

ditto, same issue here. Between that and the fuel filler door not releasing on occasion I always refill with 1/4 tank left 'just in case'. BTW anyone have a fix for the filler door release issue? I end up popping the engine cover and doing the manual release about 75% of the time. Is it as simple as some WD-40? (sorry for the hijack!)

You can somehow adjust the angle of the door and it should release easier. You could also try wd40 on the pin and line. As for removing the gas cap try putting on surgical gloves and you will increase your grip and pressure by at least 40 precent.

Glad to see I'm not alone in experiencing this little Ferrari 'feature'. I've not spent any more time on getting the cap off, as did the next best thing to driving the car, I cleaned it. Man, so, so satisfying to expend some elbow grease on the baby and watch her come up to a great shine. . .

Thanks for all the advice chaps, appreciate it. I do recall that I have no rubber gasket in my filler cap. So metal on metal it is. I'll source and fit one.

    best to ya all.

Don't over tighten it after you fill up gas/petrol.

Otherwise, wait until car has been sitting overnight. Then use little rubber sheets used to open jam jars, etc. I think you can get them at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and other kitchen supply places - maybe even Safeway (An ex-gf of mine calls them "rubber husbands").

I suspect that the neck expands more than the gas cap. So, keeping it slightly loose will compensate for the expansion.

Isn't that why there's a rubber sheet covering the gas cap ? Ops...I use that sheet to open the gas cap....I suffer from this problem every time I'm at the gas station...the cap is so freakin hot its like taking a pyrex plate out of the oven

My filler door used to hang on the rubber flap as well until I started kind of "rolling up" the flap and gently tucking it kind of under the filler nozzle. OK, it is hard to describe but it seems if I let the flap just sit flat on top of the filler cap like it should, it seemed to catch the filler cap preventing it from opening. Rolling it up and putting it out of the way really helped.

I also had this problem so I drilled a 1mm whole in the "end" of the cap and the problem is gone.
Vacuum is the reason why it get stuck
The only "problem" is that it`s hot

The system is supposed to be under pressure. You should get a code if it is not, no? I wouldn't do this as vapors will escape and could go boom, if I understand you correctly.

Happened to me many times. I had a friend meet me at a gas station with a monkey wrench to get it off one time. I felt embarassed. Two guys working on a Ferrari with a monkey wrench. Plenty of onlookers. Now I barely twist it shut. As soon as I fell the slightest resistance to twisting it shut, I STOP! No more embarassment.

I think that was the source of a code I got a while back. Now I twist it very tight after fillup, then use both hands to loosen it and yes its difficult to remove but not for a real hairdresser like myself ;).

BTW, no more code after I tighten it well!
