I am doing a boot repair and have removed the shaft from my 308 but I am having problems taking it apart to clean up and repack. Anyone have any ideas what to do for a stuck shaft. I have disassembled the inboard side with no issues (came right apart) but the outboard side is in there solid. I have tried using a rubber mallet to knock it loose with no result. Does this mean there is a bigger problem with the joint? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

First, did you remember to take the locking ring out of that end?

We had a similar problem with my friend Paul's CV joint on his '83 QV. One end came off easily, the other was stuck. We put the end piece on the jaws of an open vise, and gave the shaft a couple of good wacks with a hammer and a brass drift, and it popped right out. Just remember to either have someone holding the shaft when it let's go, or watch your toes.

Thanks for the quick response...worked! Do you remember if Paul used OEM boots or the GKN kits? I broke one of the snap rings and I am planning on using the ring supplied by the GKN kit. The kit ring has the stadard ears on it and the OEM does not. I am just wondering if anyone has had any issues with the GKN rings?

    Eric,

We used the rings from the kits we got from Partsource on his and mine. But we had a problem with one of the smaller rings, and ended up getting a set from NAPA and they worked just fine. CV boots are not unique, the rings you pick up from NAPA or just about any auto parts store will work just fine. You just need to be sure you have the tool to get them tight.

What about the circlip that comes with the kit? When removing the circlip from the end of the shaft on the outboard side I killed the ring and it would not be safe to put back on? Has anyone used the Circlips that come with the GKN kit? They look a little thicker and have the plier holes in them but appear to fit?

Cleaner way to get the CV joint off the axle is to use a puller. That is the reason there is a dimple on the end of the shaft. The circlip can be removed easily without damage with an "exterior snap ring" tool available at most parts stores for $10.
