I am trying to get the sump and gearbox cover off my 308 to change the shifter shaft seals. Unfortunately they have been stuck on with sealant on both sides of the gasket (if there is a gasket in there). Anybody have any suggestions how to get them off the engine without ruining them?

    Thanks in advance

Stacy, I've heard that some use wooden wedges like you would get at a home improvement store to ease things apart. Don't know if this will help you or not. BTW, I got the air injection plugs last Friday, thanks.

to remove the oil sump cover you need to unconnect the oil dipstick.

DO NOT USE THE BLOCK OF WOOD METHOD UNTIL IT IS UNHOOKED.

The disptick tube has been removed. The problem is that the pan is basically glued on. I think they used the black RTV.

    Walt,
Glad to hear the plugs arrived. Didn't they do a nice job making those up?

    Stacy,

This will not help with your stuck on sump, but I would recommend removing the oil temperature sender unit as this will ease the removal of the sump (when it's loose)

Those can be a real SOB!
Try carefully warming them slightly with a propane torch, then reach what you can with a razor blade. Usually that will get it started.
    HTH!
