Hi all, So I’m going through the suspension on my new to me ‘81 308. Doesn’t look like the suspension has ever been worked on. Calipers off and sent to rebuild. Have a set of QA1’s with all the Unobtanium parts ready to go. Trying to get the rear arms off. Have axels out and upper arm off. The lower hub bolt that goes through the lower a arm the nut came off but bolt will BARELY turn with a breaker bar on it. Can’t get it to move. Tried hitting the end with the nut just threaded on but nothing. Similar to the rear bolt of the lower arm where it goes into the mount. Barely turns and I can see the inner barrel of the suspension bushing turns with it so the rubber has completely separated inside the bushing. I know I can take the mount off the frame and maybe take both bolts to someone with a press but surely there’s a better way… many ideas? Thanks!
Torch, penetrating oil (PB Blaster), hammer, repeat..... Even if you take it to someone, that's what they're gonna do.
OxyAcet Wrench and a big hammer Add some grease to the new bolts prior to the next 40 years replace cycle. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Spray whatever penetrating fluid you like (none of them actually work as claimed) and put an impact wrench on the bolt to spin/free it up. Battery-powered impact wrench is one of the best tools to have around for dealing with recalcitrant fittings.
+1 on the Milwaukee M18…I got one last Christmas and that thing is a beast! Well worth the $300 my wife paid for it. Alan N.J.
if not torch get a heat gun and blast it. impact gun (i happen to like the plug in) and/or breaker bar.
If you use a breaker bar, first tighten the bolt! Yep, try to tighten it; it only needs to move a tiny fraction to break the seize and tightening will usually break it loose where trying to unscrew it first does not. Once (if) it moves, then unscrew. It may seize up again as you unscrew and require that you unscrew 1/16th turn (or whatever), then re tighten, then loosen an 1/8th turn, then tighten, loosen 3/16ths turn etc, etc, etc
