I know, it sucks. I was forced to resort to students loans, subsidized loan to be exact. Ask me a specific question and I'll try to answer it.

edit: Just noticed you said tricks and tips. Basically (1) try to make good grades and dont drop below half time. (2) If you live by yourself or parents, depending on your income or parents income, you might be eligible for a subsidized loan. (3) if so, try to start paying your loan off slowly so the total interest wont be too high when your done with school. (4) if you find that you might not be able to pay off your loan when you get out of school, you can always take 2 extra classes that you know will be easy just so you wont enter repayment and you can have to extra time to work and save a little money (not sure if you can really do this anymore though, I heard they've been cracking down on degree plans) (5) If you really really start getting into debt on a student loan you can always cut off your legs to become disabled and you wont have to pay off your loan back. :) you said "tips and tricks" right?

This book can perhaps help you out..."The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke" by Suze Orman and I remember on her PBS special someone was asking about student loans as well. Something beneficial to watch if you can find a copy of the show.
I actually put my tuition and books on my credit card which was a completely asinine thing to do as my card rates are 8.9% and student loans are around 2%...learn from my mess up.
    Also try...http://clarkhoward.com/library/tips/student_loans.html and http://www.student-loans.com/student_loans.html
