http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060316/ap_on_sc/pi_prodigy Would somebody please tell me - what is the point?!?!?!?!?
My algebra II teacher in highschool had a banner that listed digits of pi that went all the way around the classroom. Many of us found the banner considerably more interesting than the teacher, and directed our efforts towards it rather than algebra. I suspect something like that might be what started it for this kid.
people in prison in the U.A.E. are allowed early release if they can memorize the whole Koran and recite it......
Darn! http://3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592.com/ is already taken!
What a damn nerd!!!! Who cares? It's not even like that's something educational or of any importance at all. It's completely useless knowledge. I've done all sorts of math and all I've ever needed to know is 3.14 and if it required that the answer be exact I'd hit the PI button! He better be careful...ever seen the movie, "Pi?" haha "But he remembered enough to potentially place third in national and North American Pi recitation and 12th in the world." LOSER! haha.. just kidding but who the hell would sit through such a competition? LMFAO
I guess if you suck at the spelling bee you can always try your luck on reciting the numbers of Pi. How about reciting the digits for "e"? 2.71828....
About as impressive/entertaining/tedious as counting every blade of grass in your lawn.. in front of an audience.
Well, it's more impressive than anything you've ever done. It's likely a pretty good indicator a high intelligence.
I doubt it, he doesn't any room for useful knowledge now that he's filled his brain with digits. MEMORY FULL. lol
Just because you can't recite thousands of digits of Pi from memory, doesn't mean that someone who can is a nerd...
I'm a nerd too.. I just think it's a foolish waste of brain power to memorize a series of numbers. Why not memorize an atlas or dictionary.. hell, for all I know he already has.
For people whose brains are wired that way, memorizing long series of numbers doesn't take the kind of effort that it does for the majority. His accomplishment might be no harder for him than memorizing the Gettysburg address for others. People like Jim Cramer, who made a nice pile of money in the 90's, can spout baseball stats or stock market data like they were reading out of a book, but it's all in their heads. In any case, this kid set himself a goal, achieved most of it and got some public recognition for doing so. He now knows he can do this and can choose where he wants to apply this capability next. He also got an XBox360 out of it. These seem worthwhile rewards for the effort.
All that work and he's only 12th in the world, ahaha. It says he turned down his parents' offer to by him the XBox because he didn't reach 10,790.
That's awesome. I had to memorize as much of "The Raven" by Poe as I could for Gifted class in 4th or 5th grade, I did quite well and I still remember a lot of it! haha.. it's burned in my brain. Quoth the Raven NEVERMORE! That's what I want to know! He's the one that deserves recognition!
I missed that part. Able to set goals, good memory, willing to work AND integrity - sounds like a really good kid with a lot going for him as he gets older.
Dammn, I can't even remember what cereal I ate for breakfast and I know tomorrow I won't remember posting this.
