So I take delivery of my "new" 348 Spider, and take the wife on a dinner 'n' movie date in it. Dinner goes great, and then we go to the movies. Small local theatre, well lit, security patrols, and I'm thinking to myself, "hey, it's a 10 year old Ferrari".

I come out after the movie and I've got popcorn, coke, paper cups, wet paper napkins, and such all over the car. And big globs of nasty spit on the windows. Lucky for me, no permanent damage or breakage, no scratches, or anything like that. I went home and rinsed the car down. Kids in the parking lot.

Yikes, did I learn a lesson! Never mind I've gone many more places in our yellow 996 convertible (that I paid more for than I paid for my 348) and NEVER had this issue. But a RED Ferrari attracts the attention (negative too!) I suppose.

Anyone else experience hostility like that? After getting over my all-out anger and disappointment, I found myself asking questions about how people are raising kids these days (since I'm raising two of my own) to be jealous and envious of other people's possessions, instead of being motivated by them! Thought I'd share.

Good gosh, sorry to hear about this happening, especially since we are neighbors. I haven't had any white trash encounters for many years, the last one was in P.B. near the Old Ox nightclub, someone had tossed a whole helping of potato salad on the front hood of my GT4. I don't EVER drive mine at or near PB any more. A year earlier, a teenaged punk threw a michelob bottle at the rear portion of the GT4, but miraculously, no damage or dents. Was keyed once on the trunk at (again) PB when Diegos on Garnet was around during my clubbing heydays and was broken into once as the burglar smashed the DS wing window but the alarm scared him off. Again, in PB. I have never lived there, but finally learned my lesson. I don't drive it anywhere near white trash.

    Sorry for that!

It goes both ways.....sometimes car key scratches, sometimes a phone number!

Kepp up your karma and you'll be fine...a movie theatre is probably a bad idea.
We have running gun battles out in the parking lots here...dead kids on the ground....they don't know real life from a video game any more...no ****!

    That's BS !!!!!

I've been pretty fortunate but then again, I'm paranoid and always have the car in sight. Then again, it's rarely parked unless it's at home in the garage..

Man, I won't go to PB either then. You'd think Encinitas, homogenous boring suburbia, would be relatively safe, eh?

On another note, check out the SoCal thread - looking at getting a bunch of us SD guys together in Jan, weather permitting...probably Carlsbad...or running up to Crystal Cove north of Laguna.

Let's see, twice I had my 308GTS spit on...once while I was IN THE CAR! Drunken idiot,...his friends quickly dragged him away, IIRC. A couple times in my 328GTS I have been "challenged" and trash talked to....Oh, and someone dumped an entire cup of Coke with ice all over my 328GTS late at night, directly across the street from the restaurant I was at. Quite a surprise when I came out.

Haven't had the 355 long enough to record any "incidents"...but they seem to escalate with each successive "upgrade".... :(

Funny how when it was okay to swat your kid on the a55 when they misbahaved, and before there were video games of hoodlums vandalizing high end cars, this sort of thing almost never happened.

Unfortunately if you can't keep your eyes(or someone's i.e. valet guy, security, camera etc.) on your car you run a risk. What I do is scope areas first so I know where the extremely safe places are. As long as you're moving it's OK but when I have to park I will take another car unless I'm extremely confident. I know it's just a car but dealing with someone abusing it isn't worth it IMO.

I had kids piss on my Miata one night at about 2AM. I caught them while they were walking away from the car. I called the cops thinking they would scare them but they would not even call their parents.

I get my posse, approach the roaches at high speed, lock up the brakes climb out with pick handles and watch them run.

Seriously I know these are cars but in this society not only do you have to worry about misfit kids but also retards in clapped out jeeps pulling into parking lots and taking nochalant chances in seeing how casualy close they can pull up to your car, and if that doesnt work then the big time door swing ding will. Its just such a contrast to Italy where everyone enjoys the beauty of the machine.

Too bad about all these stories, and I thought California was about car culture.

The worst I've had since I got my car this summer was a snotty "Ooh... It's Magnum PI". didn't phase me too much. Most people are really cool and excited about the car; way more than anything else I've ever owned.

That said, I don't park it and leave it unwatched anywhere!!!! I've heard all the stories.

I dont drive a ferrari or anything but Im suprised at how many broken windows I see weekly walking through my college parking lot. Its not that I go to a college in a bad neighborhood (atleast i think San Luis Obispo, CA is pretty darn nice) but it seems every week i see 3-5 different cars with shattered glass next to them. Maybe completly off topic as it doesnt have to do with vandalism but I just cant believe people are low enough to steal other peoples stuff. i know its been going on a long time, but it's just not right. Im honestly suprised I still have my car down here.

Okay, so that's done in jest.

    But there's a point there.

Civilization is an artifact: like a VCR, it's something we created, not a law of nature. If your two year old (or 30 year old) can't make the VCR stop flashing "12:00" by instinct, what makes you think he (or she) will "come around" to civilization by magic? Survival is an instinct, and avoiding pain is associated. Linking civilization to survival in a direct fashion simply brings the larger philosophical notion (civilization as a tool for cultural survival) down to a scale within the grasp of a not-yet-fully-developed human (e.g. antisocial behaviour equals ouch).

Objecting to "unusual punishment" presumes that crimes are usual. Bzzzt. Error.

In my youth, my father ran punishment like Grand High Court. First the inquisition, then the formal spanking. Over time, the child grows to dread the inquisition more than the spanking: When you know you've messed up, being required to explain yourself is no easy task.

Only once did he have to resort to "five across the eyes". Like in Pirates of the Carribean, it was a fair cop. "No, I deserved that one."

My primary flight instructor, however, freely utilized the "skull thump", or "clipboard to the back of the helmet". ;)
    Again, survival was an issue.
