Alright I know why would MS want to race NASCAR. But me (a F1 fan) and some of my (NASCAR loving) buddies are having this argument right now. How would MS do? I think after a couple of months of racing MS would be at the top of the pack. Obviously my buddies think differently. What do you think and why?

Racers have an uncanny ability to judge physics, interpreting many, many variables in real-time. It doesn't matter where they apply those skills. MS would assess the limits of grip and aerodynamics in a NASCAR boat just like his Ferrari, and would probably be the fastest anyone has ever seen.

See Valentino Rossi in rally cars, or the F1 test. Or Gordon in the BMW last year.

That said, he still probably wouldn't win because NASCAR has too many other, non-driving-skill related variables. And he'd fall asleep.

    And, NASCAR sucks.

Many years ago James Hunt was invited to race in some sort of American race series ... I think it was NASCAR.

He put the car on pole in his first outing!

End of story. If you can drive and get to F1, you can drive anything!

I think out of the current F1 corp., JPM is most suited for NASCAR.

OK you little snots driving NASCAR circuits is a lot harder than you think.

Try putting your Ferrari (or whatever) through its paces at Charlotte or Daytona and you'll see what I mean. Our Porsche region rents the CMS (part of the outer/NASCAR circuit and the infield) every Fall. That's hard enough. I can't imagine drafting nose to tail at 200 mph for hours on end.

But given a few acclimation laps I think MS would dominate.

Far more interesting would be Jean Todt, Luca and Bernie at NASCAR:

"hey, these DeWalt tools are just good as FACOM and they're half the price...

aren't these delicious? grits you say? just like the polenta at home...

Jack Daniels? So that's what its called. An interesting flavor and quite... illuminating.

How much money are these rednecks prepared to spend for a ticket? Let's see....that's 24 billion extra....not counting the sponsors..."

Which Porsche region is this? I'm a regular with Peachstate PCA and Peachtree BMWCCA at Road Atlanta. Also attend Blue Ridge PCA at Lowes which I assume is CMS.

I agree that NASCAR is very difficult. I have driven Ferraris, Vipers, Porsches, Corvettes and more on many road courses from Road Atlanta to Robling Road. I have also driven on a NASCAR banked oval at Atlanta Motor Speedway. I believe the oval was more difficult to drive as the banking adding so much lateral forces to the car. And that was with a 328! So before you snobs start putting down NASCAR, drive your little Fiat on a banked oval or better yet, sign up for one of those Richard Petty Driving Experiences in a real NASCAR and then come back and tell us how easy it was.

That's a pretty bad edit job.

FWIW, Schumi is afraid of the ovals. Read the interview linked elsewere on the forum.

Personally, I think he has the skills, but I'm not certain he has the temperment to do well in Nascar. I think the rubbing would get to him.

I agree with this. He has done ovals before and isn't afraid to bump. :)

I've driven at Charlotte, now Lowes, and Rockingham with my Ferrari and Porsche many times. The ovals gave me a lot of time to relax and check gauges. I found it rather boring. We are not snobs; we simply realize the difference in the two types of racing. A lot of people prefer NASCAR because they can more readily identify with NASCAR drivers than they can with F1 drivers. You can also watch the entire race on an oval track from grandstands. That cannot be done with most road racing venues.

By the way, it's Roebling Road .

Lawrence- it's Potomac. Carolina runs there too. I have never been to Roebling but would like to someday. BTW VIR is my favorite track but the Glen (IMO) offers similar "oval like" challenges to CMS/Lowes. Turn 12 at Road Atlanta (downhill to the straight) does too IMO.

If you are indeed "relaxing" on a curved part of the oval I suspect you are not anywhere near your own or your cars limits (with all due respect).

I will do a "scan" and check gauges at appropriate points (down a straight, prior to turn in for proper RPM etc.) but I honestly never really feel "relaxed" any time I am close to the limit of the cars adhesion or braking ability- only on a true straight where I can wiggle my fingers and my butt or adjust belts and check gauges.

FYI I am not really a NASCAR fan but I did grow up in western NC (Conover/Hickory/Charlotte etc.); the Earnhardts lived close by and I went to school with the Isaacs. I greatly respect the abilities of the drivers and the skills they employ- even if I think the machines are hopelessly outdated overregulated facsimiles of actual cars. The first car race I ever attended was at Hickory Motor Speedway- Fred Lorenzen won.

And hey at least NASCAR can run on slicks- and aren't limited to 15inch wheels. How long has it been since F1 allowed that- ten years??
