OK, so I used a Fram filter when I changed the oil a couple days ago. I guess I'm a moron. If I jack up the car and pull the Fram to replace it with a UFI, will all the oil drain out? Seems to me it would. But I'm quite evidently an idiot.
Yes, I believe it will, and no, you're not an idiot. I actually screwed a filter on crooked once on an MGB, shot 5 qts of brand new oil all over the garage floor as soon as I started her up. Might have been 4 qts, it was a loooong tie ago. DM
I am sorry if I don't get it, but did all the oil drain out of the filter when you changed the oil days ago? Proper filters have a tube inside that maintains most of the oil in the filter. What was wrong with the FRAM? I would not use it either, but I have seen more FRAM on Ferrari than Baldwin and UFI together, not that I want to start a survey... Now if the question is another, try again... Regards, Alberto
Not a stupid question. No, you will lose a minimum amount of oil (depending on the filter). The oil filter mounting unit is above the sump, and only the oil in the oil pump and conduits will find its way to the filter. You can remove the filter and replace without worry. The filter design will dictate whether you lose oil in the filter. Of course, the oil will be lost in both scenarios, but with the Fram 2804-1 the center upright tube will not allow the oil to drip out of the filter. Those without the center tube will find the oil once in the filter now on your floor. In either case you will lose the amount of oil in the filter, hence, you will need to top-off once the new filter fills. Jim S.
I second Jim's findings and add there is a long thread in Vintage on the merits of various filters makers as Ferrari used the 2804-1s for many, many models Parker Hall even has the proper silkscreeen for the cannisters which you will need for Pebble (only o nthe Lawn will it matter). M
It's scary to imagine people silkscreening their cannisters for a car show! Holy Cow! I'm gonna pull the Fram for a UFI, and just put a piece of plastic underneath to catch escaping oil. Will let you know how much comes out once the new filter arrives and I get around to it. I guess it's silly, but reading about how crappy Fram filters are seems to have bugged me out. I feel much better knowing others have done dumber stuff than me!
For years Fram 2804s were all we had and they worked fine on my Dino, Daytona, and 308. What happened, did quality go down? Mike- Usually you want to change oil when the engine is hot. This time you want to change the filter when cold with rags in the appropriate places. Taz Terry Phillips
it depends, did you get a Fram with the "-1" part number ? PH2804-1 ? The -1 has a check valve to prevent the oil from draining back into the motor and allowing a cold start with the filter already full. With the -1 it should not pour out all over the place, there will be some oil but not much.
Fram filters have collapsed internally, see these photos http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195878&highlight=fram+collapse Frams withiout the standpipe have threads bout pressure related problems, a quick FerrariChat search show many threads http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=251211&highlight=fram+failure I was given a Fram that was included in a parts buy and plan on using it only for breakin on my rebuild. I'll change the oil relatively quickly as part of the run up, then convert to my standard stock of UFIs (bought a case years ago). Although from that thread here is alink to but the Baldwins http://www.go2marine.com/search.do?q=B253&x=12&y=8
Scott- Good info, thanks. Guess the quality has gone down. Ran the Frams for years, but the last time was 28 years ago. Taz Terry Phillips
I have used Frams on my cars for years, never had any trouble with them, and the 12s move lots of oil under high pressure, in my Dino they are not anywhere near their operational window and are just fine
Am guilty of drifting away from F-chat between events and other useage of the car. Recently drained the oil after warming it up. Let it drain for a while before I unscrewed the filter. Once I removed the filter, I was surprised by how much additional oil came out the crankcase via the drain plug. I conclude it was coming mostlly from the oil cooler, once the filter was removed it could drain back through the pump ( which apparently has some pretty loose clearanced going on. Also, people who say "I never had a problem with Fram", did they ever cut one open to see if it collapsed? How do they explain the multiple episodes of collapse documented here? Thanks, GF
not an idiot: I'm the idiot. left oil plug tightened-challenged. The engine replacement on that Toyota was cheap ....Japanese engines had some sort of replacement law back in the day and replacing was nice though..I stay away from somethings now.
