I spoke with my son, Olin, on Friday and the guys on the boat are really looking forward to this event!! I usually only drive through the Silverdale, Keyport, Bangor area on my way to Bainbreidge Island. I'd like some recommendations from those of you that live on the penninsula for what you think would be good routes for this drive. Byron had said the route I had originally proposed was quite a bit longer than what would normally be considered for an event like this - I would guess it would be about a 30 - 40 min drive. It would be nice to have three or four routes to choose from, so please feel free to make your suggestions. I'll take car of printing directions and maps. Thanks Again!! Erik
From Keyport I'd suggest the Brownsville hwy but I'm not sure if it's back open yet. I'll see if I can run out there in the next couple days to check. It'd be a left leaving the museum and return to Hwy 3 just north of Silverdale and back. That still might be a little long though, I'd guess it would be close to a 20 mile round trip. What kind of distances are you thinking? There isn't much out that way that won't be a bit of a drive, being sandwiched between Bangor, Keyport, Silverdale and Poulsbo. There are some good roads but it might be a longer drive. The other thing would be to head right out to Hwy 3 go north one or two exits and get back on and right back to Keyport. Two exits north the entrance ramp to Hwy 3 south is a nice LONG right hander. I'm golfing tomorrow but maybe I'll head up there for a scouting mission in the morning. If not Monday after work for sure.
How about ...... Out to Hwy 3 South thru the speed traps to Newberry Hill Road Back up Silverdale way to Keyport
Actually reversing my described route might be better. Taking a left at the bottom of the off ramp at Newberry Hill exit can be difficult. And it gives you a nice on ramp to "get up to speed" on
The speed traps are the exact reason I suggested north Of course they can often be found in either direction, that whole stretch seems to be one of WSP's favorites. If it were up to me I'd stay away from Silverdale and the ridiculous new "exchange" they put in there. I've never seen a more convoluted place in all my life!! I didn't make it this morning, but I'll head out there after work tomorrow and log some mileage readings so we have a better idea.
10-4 on the goofy Silverdale Chicane That's why I thought Newberry Hill would work (the next one to the south) Just thought the Navy guys might want a little parade down "main street"
Hey Guys - At the recommendation of an FClub member, please send your route recommendations to me @ [email protected]. The last thing I want is for the cops to be watching the area and ticketing ANYONE, so best not to advertise!! I'm in Victoria, BC right now and have been out partying with different groups from the sub. Everyone I've met has made at least one comment about the Drive nd EVERYONE is looking forward to it!! I even met the captain of the boat and he thanked me for helping to put this together!! He previously spent 4 years at Bangor and said that unless people do things like this for the crews, "...there is nothing to do in port at Bangor!" So, PLEASE accept my thaqnks ahead of time to all of you that are making this whole thing possible - The crew is REALLY looking forwad to this, AND there are guys trying to swap "duty time" in order to be able to attend!! Without your help, this cannot come to fruition, so I am eternaslly grateful!! Thanks!! Erik Saltrones
Any recommendations on route to get over there? Is anyone in Seattle/Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond/etc planning to meet up and head over together? Being a lazy bum and not sure I want to get up too early, any recommendations on places to stay nearby with safe parking for the car?
I'm taking the 8:45 ferry from Seattle to Bremerton. Hour crossing leaves 15 minutes to drive to the museum.
When I'm heading in the reverse direction (I live over here in Kitsap) I usually just drive around. But, either the Bremerton-Seattle ferry or the Edmonds-Kingston will get you about the same distance away from Keyport if you don't want to drive around. The Kingston run across the water is a little shorter. As for staying in the area the only real suggestions I'd have would be the Clearwater Casino/Resort just north of Poulsbo http://www.clearwatercasino.com/ or maybe the Silverdale Hotel http://www.silverdalebeachhotel.com/ Not sure how secure parking would be at either place. I do know the casino at least has covered parking and I would think it would be pretty secure. If you do drive around, just head for Bremerton and then head north on hwy 3 to the Keyport exit, turn right and you will almost run into the musuem. It'll be on your right just after you pass the "lagoon" on your right, look for the white towers at the gate to Keyport and turn right there, then left into the parking lot.
I don't have a count, but I've got 15 adults on the list for people wanting to tour the boat and have gotten about 5 emails from other people saying they'll be there... This link is to the Museum Website: http://www.history.navy.mil/museums/keyport/index1.htm This link is to the "Directions" page: http://www.history.navy.mil/museums/keyport/location.htm The site loads slowly, so be patient, though the directions page loaded quickly! The extended weather forcast is for a sunny day!! It may be foggy early though...
By the way ... The meet up time is from 10:00 am in the museum parking lot. Due to ferry schedules the time is flexible. I can be reached at 253-219-4586. Naval Undersea Museum Navy Region Northwest 1103 Hunley Road Silverdale, WA 98315-1103
Yes, it will be starting at 11:00. At least, that's what I told all the other guys on my boat. I believe my dad had scheduled for it to begin around 11:00, with cars starting to show up at around 10:00. Even 11:00 is flexible, though. Thank you all who have expressed so much interest in this drive for my crew. I hope to see you all there. V/R Olin Saltrones
OK, is there a meeting place over here in Seattle so we can gather and drive/float over? Tim 206-852-3554 [email protected]
I'm planning on driving, instead of taking a ferry. If anyone wants to meet up at the "Southcenter Mall" parking lot (between Nordstrom/Bahama Breeze) at 9:30AM, please let me know. Gary
Gary, After looking at the total time I figure driving is better than dealing with ferry lines and ramps. I'll plan on meeting up with you at Southcenter.
Unfortunately, I'm out. I was reminded I start rotation tomorrow on our production site and am required to stay within 30 minutes of the office in case anything goes wrong. Tried to swap it but no go. Looks like it'll be a great day for a drive. Sucks I'll miss it. You guys have fun.
we are having logistics problems is it possible if we have to to put someone else on the tour? I don't know if we can for sure but I don't want to miss out if we don't have to
Gary (and those filing through Tacoma), I'll hook up with you as you approach the Narrows Bridge. Give me a call and/or I'll call you around 9:30 and figure I'll catch you flying by around 10:00.
Sorry for getting to this so late - I got home just after 11:00 pm... There is a problem with the tour since the sub isn't a resident boat and the person I was working with didn't see the boat on the schedule, so the whole thing got dropped by the Public Affairs Office at Bangor. I had to submit the guest list to Olin's Division Chief again today and he passed it up the chain of command. The boats Captain called an Admiral in from dinner for him to give his approval, but they are still waiting for approval from the Marine in charge of base security. There won't be an answer until sometime Sunday. I do know that the officers on the submarine have been working very hard to make the tour part of this event happen, but it is not gauranteed. I do understand if this prompts some of you to drop out. As a reminder, there will be a giveaway and there is a possibility Evening Magazine may be there - though once again, that is NOT guaranteed. Thanks again to all of you that participate!! Erik - 253-219-4586
