My 308QV is coming up for a major service since it has been 3 years and 4K miles. Since the car sits a lot, I want to do a major every 3 years. My question is what should I do for the major? The valve adjustment, water pump, seals, gaskets, timing belt, tensioners, etc were all done in 2002 at the last major service. I am planning on installing new timing belts and tensioners, gaskets and seals. Is there anything else I should do since I am already doing the major? Should I replace the water pump, adjust the valves, etc. knowing it was just done 4K miles? With the car only having 3 years and 4K miles since the last major, I do not know what to do.

    Thanks
    Ken

There is no need to replace the seals if they are not leaking. Do the belts and be done with it.

If you start and drive your car, even if it's just for 15-minutes a week, you can go a lot longer b/w service. 5-years easy.

Don't you have the service book? That details all the operations per mileage interval......

It seems a little odd to say "well, you can take this short-cut" when you've already taken the super-super-conservative position of doing the major every 3 years. If the seals aren't leaking, I'd do the fluids and forego everything for the next two years ;)

Unlike the longitudinally-mounted mid-engined cars, combining the water pump work with the major is less of a savings/concern on a 308 IMO, but you seem almost fearful...

I always wanted a 308QV since it came out when I was in middle school, but now that I own one I never drive it. Between school, work and family there just isn't anytime to drive the damn thing. Please do not send me any hate mail due to my lack of use. I realize that I have not properly exercised my Ferrari.

I change the oil and filter twice a year and the brake fluid, coolant and gear oil once a year regardless of mileage. I realize this may be over kill, but I enjoy working on the car and better to error on the side of caution. And while 3 years for belt changes may be a bit much, I realize it is not good for the belts for the car to sit (the belts may become deformed and MAY jump the teeth) and I do drive my car hard once it is warmed up.

I'm in the same situation but you are killing me here. I changed the belts after after a 12 year interval, and they looked fine to me. I replaced all the fuel and coolant hoses last week and only one coolant hose showed signs of posibility of failure. You are way over the top with service, slow down and enjoy it a little more. If the seals aren't leaking leave them alone and find something else to tinker with. Maybe you should get another Ferrari!!!

I was the same with a 2-seat Lotus - the only place I could drive it was to work & back.

That's why I've now got a 2+2 Ferrari! I can take the kids, etc everywhere!

Note to self: If I'm ever in the market for a QV this is the car I want to buy...

You'll be fine for another 2 years. Just do as the others have said regarding fluids etc. As long as the car has been started and run for a bit in between road use..you'll be more then fine. 4000km in 3 years about 1300km per year. Enough to keep the belts from getting memory in my books...

    Ken,
Change the fluids and wait 2 years. If you are set about getting the belts, then skip the valve adjustment. They are rarely out at even 15K. Don't worry about the water pump. Normally the seals go bad and begin to leak. You will have plenty of warning before failure. I bought an 85 QV in 1999 that still had the original belts which I changed right away but they were in good shape.

The best thing you can do for that car is drive it.
