I apologize if I am beating a dead horse or if I missed a thread already started regarding my question. I have a 1/12th scale Renault RE20 I bought in '85 and it is still in the original box and in its original condition and has been kept indoors out of the elements so even the tires are in perfect condition. I tried painting a few parts in '85 but soon realized that I could not build it as accurately and precisely as it deserves. It was soon out of sight and out of mind for 25+ years but I would love to get her built.

I know this model has been discontinued for many years and is rather rare, I paid $100 for it back in '85 and I am not looking to sell it but make it one of the center pieces of my small but growing F1 collection (I need a display case).

So the point of all this is I think it best that I have it built professionaly so I am hoping I can get some suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    Gregg

depends on how much (if) you want to spend, but it's definitely possible to re-do a kit model like that
if you're wanting it to be detailed beyond the kits origginal design/level, then it's just a matter of determining how much so :)
the decals are not going to be able to save, so a new set would need to be made, fortunately that is less complex process now then it use to be, and the renault team graphics are not highly complex either
any de-chromed peices can be done alcad2 which is even more realistic chrome finish than most kits anyways IMO

Would the decals be gone even if they were kept in the box and away from the elements? Im only asking because i have a few kits in the attic over 20 years old. Thanks.

some decal sets can degrade even when kept in bbox for extended time, it depends on the type of adhesive/glue used by that particular maker
i've seen some that are water activated, still work fine, but others which simply don't work when tried, or worse condition, when the glue has actually discolored the decals themselves
heat and sunlight also can have a negative effect on stored decal sets
decal-set type products can help, but they introduce moisture activation, so are not always a good solution

Ah I did not think about the decals degrading over time but hopefully they are still usable. The few parts I did paint are still attached to the molding frame.

I know my request is rarely asked but I was hoping someone here had some suggestions from experience, it is not a rush job by any means. I'll see what I can find in the Houston area as I would prefer to keep it local and not have to worry about damage during shipping.

Thanks for the input gentlemen keep it coming,
    Gregg

What sort of budget do you envision for the build? I may be able to point you to some world class builders but it will not be cheap and I don't want to get anyone into the wrong shop so to speak.

The decals do sometimes fragment upon contact with the water due to cracking of the carrier varnish. Sometimes they can be preserved by over-coating with clear varnish prior to application. Sometimes it is just easier to recreate them.

exactly ...it's pretty easy now'a'days being able to print dry transfer decals, and even contact decal sheets too ....cool stuff! :)

Michael at http://diecastcustoms.com/ and I have been talking for the past few weeks and we have reached a mutual agreement concerning the build and the details. Once he recieves the model and goes over eveything there may be some additional cost as certainly the original stickers have degraded but that has yet to be determined.

So hopefully sometime after the first of the year I will have more details.

    Stig,
After talking with Michael concerning various details we have agreed on a $500-$600 budget with no time frame but most likely around 3-4 months for the build. He is doing me a solid/favor of sorts but we are not doing anything until after the first of the year as things may be drastically different for me by then which could entail a two year delay.

    I'll keep everyone updated.
