Haha, I was waiting for a local to defend its City honour :p

Well of all the times I have been to Canberra outside of Summernats, its been a party during Summernats and completely dead all the other times  so I can't see why you think it doesn't have a local flavour to it when Canberrians are out and about

Yes agreed the workmanship on the cars for the Top100 or more so the Top 10 is indeed amazing as not all of them are from workshops and the fact they have to actually drive them in those grass events/burnouts to become Grand Champion (unlike the posing Ferrari concourse :p ) is something to give them credit for. Also seeing a jet engine in a car that came out with a 3cyl engine is always a laugh :)

Going to Summernats festival by yourself isn't exactly thrilling its more for groups of mates and was just suggesting to mhh that unless he is really keen on street machines, smoking rubber, burning in the sun and getting drunk he might not enjoy it/worth the detour.

There are plenty of old folk around Summernats esp that own the workshops/cars but that is their scene they breathe it everyday.

I didn't mean only locals were trouble makers. I would agree with you that alot of the troublemakers inside the grounds are interstate clowns.

I am the last one you should look to defend the honour of 300 square kilometres surrounded by reality!! :)

Home is where you hang your hat...but the antics of the local "politicians" (for the want of a better word) is getting the best of me...I might move to struggletown!! :)

    Live News: Watch it now

The Summernats festival may not be back next year as crowd numbers are well down on previous years.

The Summernats festival has wrapped up in Canberra, possibly for the last time.

Crowd numbers are well down on previous years, and the owner's hinted he's considering moving the event to Sydney.

The Summernats car festival in Canberra is heaven on earth for rev-heads, almost.

Visitors do face one uncomfortable dilemma: deciding whether to first gawk at the hotted up cars or the girls wearing clothing more often seen on the beach than the bitumen.

Numbers are down 10 per cent this year, in part due to the global financial crisis, but that hasn't stopped those attending from living it up.

And that means embracing the noise, the burnouts and the skimpy outfits.

Competitions include best burnout, best paint job, best sound system and, of course, best chick.

The Miss Summernats contest always draws a huge crowd.

This year Kylie Woods from Manly walked away with the cash.

Summernats received national media coverage for all the wrong reasons in 2008.

After a number of visitors were kicked out for misbehaving, a 300-strong mob marched around the venue - Canberra's Exhibition Park, yelling 'Angry mob' and Summernats' infamous catch-cry 'Show us your tits'.

This year one young man carried a cardboard sign letting everyone know he still wanted to see more flesh.

But overall the atmosphere was more family friendly.

Event organiser Chic Henry, who was embarrassingly caught by the cops speeding, described this year's crowd as mellow.

'So far it's a very mellow crowd here and everybody seems very happy,' Mr Henry told reporters.

Visitor numbers - like the atmosphere - are also subdued.

Mr Henry says he expects 90,000 through the gates over the four-day event, down on the hoped for 100,000.

But the event organiser doesn't believe the rev-head is a dying breed.

He says people will always love to mess around with cars 'no matter what'.

I don't think Sydney would be an ideal choice. Sydney already has SuperNats and Powercruise as well as WSID meets every other week. The scene here is mainly turbo'd 4'/6's/rotaries. He might as well retire the event all together or look at other country towns/state.

    Wait n see I guess.
