I sent an email to Dave. Thanks guys!
Fat Billy Bob, and the go to guy now is Dave for visors, who improved on the procedure and has done dozens for 550 and 575M owners. Maranello Skunk Works strikes again.
Thanks Terry, So far I've done about 50 visors. I'm still a couple of weeks away from resuming visor repairs. A total knee replacement is a biotch to recover from as age creeps up on one, thank goodness this is my last one.
I am in need of how to disconnect the electrical clip on my passenger side visor so I can send it to Dave for repair. Can someone please explain it to me. I am afraid I am going to break it and be in worse condition then a droopy visor. Thanks for the help! Rob
This is the visor side of the connector, it looks like a tab fits into the open slot, Best I can do Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dave- Funny, I did it but cannot remember how it came apart either. Must not have been too difficult. Main trick was to pull enough cable out to be able to easily see and work with it. Here are three images of it loose after you fixed it if they will help him. It looks like there is a little slot (lower one) that probably has a triangular piece that holds it together. Push that in while spreading the piece with the slot and it should separate. You guys are on it. The only other note would be that yes there is a lot of wire up in there (headliner). I remember pulling the wire out thinking how long can this be and then thinking maybe mine doesn't have a connector plug when finally after enough gentle pulling the connector plugs come out. Fortunately the slack (extra wire) makes it easier to work with. Unplug the connector and let Dave fix you up...only way to go. I'll note again, a new visor elbow plastic piece is a waste of money. Installed one, lowered it once then it went to Dave for a perma-fix. Bill FL
Hi Guys - I have a 2006 Maserati MCV that was made back when there was a a lot of crossover between Ferrari and Maserati because one was (charitably?) trying to manage the other. Two days ago my driver's side (LH) visor began to sag and after taking it out of the car, it looks quite a bit like the sagging 550 visor problems posted here. It's a cheap plastic arm on the hinge that would soon fail just like the original and there are no replacements available from the factory. 1. Does anyone know if the two visors are actually the same internally even though the exterior shape is different? 2. I've seen that there may be a member or two who have either been repairing or offering a repair kit for the visors. Are these services or kits still available?
Rich, I'm the visor repair guy: 550 & 575 Sunvisor Repair If you want to take a couple of pictures of the hinge pin and email them to me I'll look at it. It may be the same but I wouldn't know for sure without taking the hinge pin out and measuring it.
Sent to Dave and never looked back... it will be a dark day when the the Maranello Skunkworks team calls it quits... theyve done so much for our group
Dave is still repairing visors, did one yesterday and have another coming this week. The problem with selling the insert only is that the shafts vary in diameter and length, That's why I chose to stop selling the insert. I didn't want people to be complaining that my inserts didn't fit. Now I have the inserts made with an undersize hole in the center and bore it to fit that particular shaft. This also insures a new clean surface for the bonding agent. So far I've done over a hundred and fifty visors with a 100% success rate. All that said, I have 14 inserts left and when they are gone it will be the end for me.
Dave fixed mine and it has been working no problems for a decade, at least. Glad to hear you are still doing it, Dave.
Dave also fixed my sun visor going on 7 years and still works fantastic! I was also lucky that he was about 10 min local to me. Thanks again Dave, I hope you’re doing well!
Dave, you’re sorely missed as a great friend and Ferrari collaborator. Funny story about Dave’s MSW Switchable Steering ECUs. We had really high hopes for these things, so Dave made up a batch of 10 and they were a real PITA to make. Once done, we couldn’t give them away and Dave said “never again”. Then something odd happened and all 10 were sold in short order and the community began clamoring for more, but we declined to produce them. So there are 10 very special 550s out there that have these and AFAIK everyone loves them! We called them the “poor man’s Manettino” lol.
It's nice to see him stop by every so often to assist us. I'm one of those fortunate 10 owners. Here's my “Poor Man’s Manettino...” Image Unavailable, Please Login Dave once joked about the rusty screws securing the 1cm spacer underneath my brake pedal which facilitates safe heel and toe shifting... Image Unavailable, Please Login He said I could get nice stainless steel screws from McMaster-Carr. I promised I would. That was fourteen years ago. Dave, those two rusty screws are still there.
