I replaced the trans fluid with the redline superlight gear oil after reading tons of good reviews on here and other sites. Seems most have really good experiences with it and long term which is why I made the decision to go that rout. Started really digging into gear oil additives and ratings of other 75w-90 oils. Some of the description on redlines site makes me nervous.

    ex.

"Red Line SuperLight ShockProof gear oil is a unique product to lubricate shifter kart transmissions and low-power road racing transaxles."

"SuperLight ShockProof oil is designed for low-temperature situations when maximum power output is required, such as during qualifying laps."

    • Used in low-power dog-ring racing transaxles with moderate to low load, qualifying, etc.
    • Avoid use with pumps, coolers, and filters as unique medium and affinity for metal can cause clogging.

I'm just wondering if anyone has used it for an extended period of time, significant amount of miles and had negative results?

I also noticed the first drive of the car after doing the engine out major and trans fluid change a transmission whine under very light load cruising. Start to accelerate and it went away, let off and it went away. I Drove it in to work this morning making the same noise which led me to all my searching. I drove it on my lunch break at it is completely gone and sounds perfect, shifts smooth. This is my first time really driving this car since purchase so I wasn't too sure what to expect, and now also just thinking it was a lack of lubrication from sitting so long by the previous owner.

I had it in for a little bit, i didn't really care for it. The 75w-90NS is the regarded as the goto now, IMO. I'll let others chime in.

Im not saying Shockproof doesn't work for people or causes problems but its not what Redline recommended to me for road use. This is an age old discussion. Ive used the NS for the last eight years in the 348 without any issues and found it helped considerably. The advice came from my local Red Line rep whom I know well. Previously we used it for notchy Subaru manual gearboxes for years before that. Became a standard service item.

This is my spin on the subject but im sure others have their own opinions..

Had the same issue. Read about it, bought, it but before I used it I read more and redline is pretty clear about not using with gear boxes with internal pumps. It's thin like tranny fluid so I bought Amsoil GB oil and chucked RL super lite, but I use RL in the engine currently.

My experience was somewhat different than others have reported. When I did my major I had the shop install RedLine NS and my shifting was really poor to the point it was impossible at times to get 5th gear (to be fair I think the shifter was not in perfect adjustment). I then within a few days drained and replaced with RedLine Shockproof and the shifting improved substantially (I didn't change the shifter adjustment). I ran that for two years and then after a detailed thread here that had some really good info on the disadvantages of the Shockproof I replaced it with RedLine MTL which is the GL4 which is specified for the 348 box. Besides making me feel better about having the SP out of my box my shifting improved again by another smaller amount. So moving forward I will stay with the MTL which was the recommended oil by the Rifle man by the way.

I went back to their regular stuff. Seems fine. I did not notice any difference.

I had Redline MTL in my 355. A few years ago I needed to replace 3rd gear syncro and the MTL was a slimmy goo. It took them more than an hour to clean it out of the tranny. I would not use it in a 355.

If I remember correctly the 355 box calls for a GL5 oil which MTL is not. You are correct that it is not the proper oil to use. I can't seem to find the thread from several years ago that went into this subject quite well with some really good input from people like RifleDriver. If somepne can find it the info could be helpful for this thread.

I think 348 calls gl5 also. Its weird that gl4 oil would couse issues to synchro rings, its gl5 oils that make synchros harder time to engage. I use gl4 in my 348 (now mtl) and shifting is nice. When i rebuilded my transmission i noticed that there had been some heat in those synchro cones. I resurfaced them

    Hey Jh348
Curious about your tear down and rebuild of the trans. I saw where you had a similar noise as to what I am experiencing and it was the clutch shaft ring nut had come loose on you. Is this shaft able to be removed from the rear of the trans without the removal of the entire trans? In other words can I pull the clutch assembly off and get that shaft out to inspect the ring nut with the trans still in the car?
