It really doesn’t matter that much at your level but that you take in good protein. Soy, or whey is what I like. Eat fish & chicken. I get my bodybuilding & bike supplements from Nutrition Express –same products as GNC for less. If you are afraid of problems, drink lots of water to keep kidneys flushed of ketones. Just my NON-MEDICAL but winning opinion.

As a Biology student... and cannot stress enough how important it is to break down your food properly. The keys to building muscle are.

    1. first and foremost, a good diet. Tons of veggies, clean carbohydrate sources, and HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN (fish eggs and poultry are the best). Only eat about 4-500 calories over what you need. Don't follow those dumb diets claiming you need 300+g of protein a day. They just want to sell you their 'whey'. BTW, whey(cheese protein) is garbage! Diary protein is one of the most poorly absorbed proteins out there; not to mention the fact that 99% of us cannot breakdown 'galactose' in dairy anyway! Even if your doctor says you are not lactose intolerant, they is a VERY good chance you are storing fat everytime you eat dairy just because you cannot breakdown galactose. Track your meals at www.fitday.com

    2. Positive thinking. You are what you eat, and you ARE what you think! Never second guess yourself. You learn from everything. Know you can do it! (because you can). Anybody that has ever Deadlifted 500+ will tell you. It is entirely what you think about! For more information on this, read into Quantum Physics. I would also suggest 'Molecules of Emotion' - Chandice Pert

    3. Lower your stress. Learn to relax, all of the time. When you eat, your stomach has to digest the food. The most important part of digestion is where the villa in your intestine absorbe nutrients and macromolecules. These villa are extremely tiny. The contain, just a vein and an artery each. In order for them to function properly, your body releases Acetylcholine when you begin eating. This is a neurotransmitter that will lower your heart rate/ BP enough for the Villa to be able to function. If you have any stress/anxiety while eating, your fight/flight response will take priority over digestion and your food will be wasted.... mostly converted to fats I bet; as well.

4.Vitamins, minerals and enzymes. In order to break down a protein in a lab, you need hours (sometimes days) of boiling it in a strong acid. Your stomach can do this is a matter of minutes with the right enzymes! This is why I usually throw in some pineapple in larger meals. Beleive it or not, Beer has tons of enzymes as well, and it helps to lower stress. Sometimes, one of my meals will have all of it's carbs just from a Killian's :)

The Single most import vitamins to buliding muscle are in the B complex group. They are Choline and B6. But you need to increase your Bcomplex as a whole for them to function. By far, the best book I ever found was "Bodybuilders nutrition" by Dr. Franco Columbu.

    5. Excersize. Master the form, and then push yourself; harder each time. Enjoy it! Also, keep a log at www.LouisDorman.com :)

    6. AGAIN, remember that only Protein builds muscle! But too much protein in a sitting/day will trigger a process called "deammination". This is a metablolic pathway where you body converts protein--->to a sugar----->energy. This is a really volitile process in which lots of lactic acid is made. You'll never heal, (sore for days after work out). This can also occur when you don't eat carbs appropriately. You need to find a happy medium between too much/too little carbs. Never more than 60g in a sitting (if you are under 200lbs). get your carbs from fresh fruit around work out times. This will help keep some vitamins in your while your sweating them all out.... Some vitamins are oil soluable, some are water.... You will need to learn and understand when your body is in need of certain vitamins. There are keys to this, but everybody is different. Everbody also tends to have a genetic condition where they are pre-disposed to a deficiency as well. For example, lots of people beleive that 'not remembering your dreams' is due to a lack of B6. You can learn more in Franco book about this, if you care to get in depth.

7.Building muscle is a lot harder than you think. They will never have a magic pill. Even Steroids... Dianabol (Dbol), Test, and the precursor/prosteroids that have recently been banned (M1T,ect) are NOT magic pills. This is the publics common misconception. Building muscle is done with your brain, and you need a harmony in your body to do this. I would never recomend messing with your hormones, or even individual amino acids (arginine/lysine balance..i.e NOx3 ). Because I'm sure you're ultimate goal is to be 'healthy' as well.

Thanks! :) But actually I'm first year Bio engineering, just transferred from Mechanical. I just have always loved this stuff.

Of course do! I wanna look good naked, just like everybody else.....lol I never had any aspirations for competition though. When the diets start getting that radical, I really think it loses that 'healthy' apeal that bodybuilding already had to me.

Not to be a cold-towel, but a dose of reality:

I've met and know many people who are well involved in the body-building "industry". When you see a picture of some guy who's totally ripped and buff...well, most all those guys have horrific medical issues and their bodies are beat-up and trashed from those years of working-out so hard. It's DEFINITELY a enjoy-now, pay big-time later issue!!!

Medically speaking, your best bet is to do a moderate amount of cardio and dial-in some resistance training for a comprehensive all-around toning. Eat right, eat well...and there ya go. It has been well established that there is an optimal amount of exercise & weight-training that is ideal: going beyond that will shorten your life and quickly deteriorate your body. Just like the Ferrari, regular use, not abuse.

Pounding protein and eliminating carbs is very unhealthy and puts a tremendous toll on your kidneys. Same with fats; your body needs essential fatty-acids & lipids: eating white-meat turkey and lettuce ain't gonna do it! At the same time, there's all sorts of supplements, drugs and dangerous untested crap that marketing schiesters will try to sell to you.

A pharmacists once told me: anything you take acts on your body to make it do something that nature did not intend. And most the things you could take, your body will correct once you get off them. Think about it.

Cool, I was gonna switch to biomechanical engineering from mechanical 2 years ago but never got around to it.

Is there any concern regarding the long term effects of supplements are?

GNC and all the other chains sell crap/inferior products that are way over priced...At your age I would take betastatin shakes www.betastatin.com and secretagogue one which is a HGH releaser and makes you sleep like a baby....Cheapest place to buy these products online is: www.directsupplement.com

I guarantee you will get some great results with these products, best results if you diet is right.
