Anyone compare the two yet, would like to hear your opinion. Wife liked the idea of getting the Surface due to MS compatibility. Cheers!
I bought a Surface RT on the first day to try. The Surface RT is similar to the iPad in capability where it is a consumer focussed tablet with no significant local storage. You are pointed towards cloud storage. If you are looking for a notebook replacement with the full MS Office I would wait for the Pro version due in January. That will be closer to an Ultrabook. The Surface RT is a great device except for two issues that are a deal killer for me. Therefore if you are buying now I would recommend the iPad. Those two things are: 1. The real performance of the device is poor. Once you really start to use it, it is sluggish and some things take forever. Delays like waiting a few seconds for the screen to update after you hit the scroll keys is unacceptable. 2. The Windows 8 store is a ghost town. It will take a while to mature and fill out with the apps you are familiar with from iOS or Android.
They've got a heck of an uphill battle. Lots of people bought iPad's when they never had any interest/desire/use for any kind of "tablet" before. This is just MS playing catch up. I love my iPad for watching movies on an airplane, surfing the net on my couch while watching tv, and a few apps here and there.... But if I need to work on a document, power point, or spreadsheet, I have no desire to do that on a tablet. I use my computer. (and most every other "business" person I know is the same) I'm calling flop on this one.
SRT Mike has a pretty good and extensive thread going on in Silver about the Surface. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=386689
Don't go windows RT, go for the full blown windows 8 surface devices. I played with the Lenovo Yoga at the local best buy and that, or something similar, will be my next PC/tablet purchase. It runs the full version of windows, has an intel i5 quad core processor so is extremely fast and responsive. iPad/WindowsRT are purely for consumption. The full blown windows 8 surface devices can be used for anything and everything. The only debate for me is whether to get a convertible like the Yoga, or just a tablet with the keyboard cover. It's a portability debate, but I'll have to play with some more of them. The iPad is a toy in comparison.
