In searching for a Freon leak (which I still haven't found :( ) I removed all of the carpeting/panels from the trunk and found 2 things I thought odd.

First, connected to the antenna were 2 Bosch relays taped together with electrical tape. Has anyone ever seen this or something similar? I'm assuming from the "bracketry" it's not an original antenna. The 2 green and grey striped wires look to be the factory wires to the power antenna.

Second, on the other side of the trunk I found a long cable with a 25 pin connector of some sort plus some additional unconnected wires. Wonder if this could have been for some sort of mobile car phone that had been installed back in the day. Does this look familiar to anyone?

Maybe a trunk mounted CD changer?

Seems unlikely. It has the original Blaupunkt radio.

I think it's cell phone equipment, possibly adapted from Mercedes-Benz original equipment. Here's an eBay ad for something called a PSE, that also has a female 25-pin connector: http://preview.tinyurl.com/8cpmjrw . I think it's an amplifier for the antenna. Prof. Google led me in this direction with a query of "25 pin connnector in trunk." (My Google queries tend to be very unimaginative.)

The relays are are for the antenna, the connector is almost certainly remains of an old cell phone installation.

I bet the relays were added due to overloading the antennae switch. My switch is acting up in the up mode and shows some brown discoloration. Relays would eliminate the load.

There was a 80's version car phone set up in my trunk when I got it but all the cabin stuff had been removed. I loved pulling out all those unneeded wires!

Thanks to all for your feedback. I'll be removing all the car phone wiring too. Apparently the antenna relays are a good idea and I'll mount them so they're not just laying around back there.
