I love the stuff! I can eat it 'til I puke! The long rolls with the sauces are the BOM! Who else here enjoys sushi and what type will you NOT eat?

Love all types of Sushi. Especially the Tuna rolls, as well as the Prawn ones. I think you guys call em Shrimp.

I steer clear of all sushi that is EEL. I refuse to have that stuff. It freaks me out. Dont really like the Raw Tuna ones, as the meat is pretty tough, and sometimes the caviar ones can be a little bit suspect.

But other than that, im a fan!

I enjoy different types of Maki sushi and sashimi, but am not too fond of nigiri sushi which is the most traditional.

My favorite is inari (cone sushi).

Go to Japan. The really fresh stuff rocks. I've eaten cheap lunch box grade sushi that is better than most of the stuff in the USA.

You've got to try drunk shrimp. Now that is fresh. ;)

I went out last night for Valentines and my normal place didn't have their sushi "happy hour". I hate paying full price, I eat too much (my record is 61 pieces). Just curious, the normal price is $1.75 per piece and $5-8 for most rolls. How does that compare with everywhere else?

I have grown to love the stuff and here in the bay area you can get some of the best, although I have yet to find and try the blowfish locally. The two that I really don't care about are Mackerel and Octopus. Mackerel is too oily and fishy, and Octopus rubbery. My favorites are spicy tuna roll with fresh Pico de Gallo (Mexican salsa) and Ahi sashimi.

If you are ever in the City try either Tokyo Go Go or Blowfish nothing traditional about them but the sushi is dynamite.

Ever see the Simpson's episode where Homer thought he had eaten Blowfish that was not prepared correctly? That was a riot! For the Bay Area, Miake in Cupertino has the cheapest and probably some of the best Sushi. A plate of California rolls (8) for $2.25. As for ell, its great! I am a pig and can;t eat $20 worth of food at this place. On the flip side, I hate Japanese restaurants that overcharge ($8 for a 8 piece California roll @ $1.00 cost), they suck!

No haven't seen that episode must be a good one.

If it's real crab meat that is damn good price...I am not sure if I have ever had it that cheap and I've gone to many places locally.

One of the best I’ve ever had was at Yokohama center, a sushi place with fish tanks...They caught a couple of them and served them as sashimi with a stick through the rest of the fish which were still twitching...afterwards they came and collected the two fish and made miso soup with the bones. There is also a place down in Shinjuko that used (back in 2000) to charge about $20/person for all you could eat...

There was a place in Akasaka that I vaguely remember, I think it came out to around $180/person + alcohol.

You don't know what expensive is until you entertain in Tokyo. :)

I have never tried sushi. I need to find a good place. My friends always go to this one place near school that has an awful odor that takes my appetite away.

I will not eat anything raw so what cooked sushi would you guys suggest as a first time dish?

Matt: Sushi Sam's in San Mateo, Tomokazu in Burlingame. Actually, I tried Yoshi's in Oakland (famous jazz/sushi) and the nigiri stuff was quite good.

I went to one place int he city that had absolutely fresh fresh fresh stuff - somewhere in the financial district, can't remember.

Maybe you needed to put a touch more wasabi on it. If you want more, say namida (tear) to the chef - that oughta clear the air.

Fortunately, my folks are "surrogate" grandparents to a Sushi Bar owner's kids. Real grandparents are in Japan, so the kids "adopted" them.

If you haven't made it at home, try it, you'll like it. So will she.

I've had occasion to try it but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The sushi I've come across has been the real nasty looking kind I've had friends tell me I should try the California roll first. What would you guys recommend?

Caifornia Rolls with some wasabe and soy are like candy. The absolute most tame sushi is Inari. It's just rice (and somethimes a little shredded carrot) rolled inside a paper thin sheet of fried egg.

Find a place that is very fresh, then I would start simple with fresh sashimi. Smell it. If it smells fishy, don't eat it. Its not fresh.

I would start with any of the tunas. If you don't like that, don't go any further.

When you become an expert, you too can participate in discussions like this at midnight in Japan:

    them: "Ah, Nielsen-san, please enjoy."

    me: "WTF is that?"

T: "It is like fish egg."

    M: "Like?"

    T: "You know fish egg?"

    M: "You mean roe?"

T: "Ah yes, roe. This is brother of roe."

M: "Shimasen, nama biro, domo arigato" (Excuse me, miss, draft beer. Thank you)
