    Hej,

In trying to sort my 456 GT I have now come to the suspension actuators.
I've managed to find an actuator at a reasonable price to exchange one of the fronts that had a mechanical fault (the little gear was also replaced).

I'm still experiencing a fault code which I decoded at Ferrari with an SD2 equipment to be a 'blocked actuator' on the right front (the exchanged unit was on the left). The other actuators now pass their tests but the forth sets this blocked code. The fun thing was that it didn't matter if the actuator was connected to the damper or if it was spinning in freed air (damper gear is really smmoth in its operation) . We also exchanged the actuator unit with a brand new unit but we got the same result.

So my Q then would be does anyone really know how these work?, how do the actuator determine it has found one of its two stops (max hard or soft), my mechanic said that the unit measured the current which rises as the actuator is blocked/found its end stop.

Could it be that the cable is bad or (anyone experienced this)??

    Ideas?

    /joakim

Look carefully inside the female connector to see if one or more of the pins has been pushed back in its housing. I've had this happen.

The actuators will always give a code when unattached to the shock, that's what the stop on the gear is for. They spin so far in one direction, hit the stop and reverse to the stop again then stop at a central position. This sets the parameters for the Hall effect sensors in the actuators.

Without being attached to the shock they will just continue to spin and no signal is sent to the ECU so the ECU sets a code.

I know but the actuator did only spin a small amount and it did not matter if it was attached or not. I have checked the pins upon an earlier advice (thead) from you but they look ok.

Also another funny thing is that it does matter how the actuator is mounted, an err code will be set if the actuator isn't preset properly on the damper. The actuator does learn the stops but it shouldn't need to as it always assume it starts in one of the ends.. This err code though does not matter much for function it seems but you can read it from the ecu..

It shouldn't matter in what position the actuator is mounted on the shock as long as its fully seated.

Its sounding more and more like a wiring problem if you've got the same error on that corner from two different actuators.

First thing I would do is a continuity test on both ends on the connector with the actuator connected just to make sure that its fully connected. You may have to do a continuity test on all the wires from the connector to the ECU.

Just for fun try unplugging the ECU and re-inserting the plug

yep, I'll do that, I just need to find the time..

Yes it is funny about the position but the Bilstein ECU clearly sets an err code if the actuator doesn't start in predetermined position dispite that it matter nothing for function, so german..

Found the error, slightly embarrassing one of the cables had loosened from the ECU so with a little push and a click the suspension now works for the first time.

The soft setting is really lovely it's a bit like floating :)
