I was troubleshooting a problem with my aftermarket stereo and had the leave the ignition on for quite some time without engine on. After a while the info screen on the dash on my '01 456 showed the warning symbol for the self leveling system, then the dash went dead - ie no gauges work - the only thing that lights up is the check engine light. I checked the fuse panel and the inst. fuse which is tied to the suspension system was blown. I replaced it and it blew immediately. Let the car sit overnight replaced the fuse, dash worked for about 30 secs - and fuse blew again..

The car starts and runs OK but no gauges, I don't have wiring diagram but is there a relay or ECU that controls the suspension - could that be my problem - any insight welcomed
    Franck

Sounds like you have a problem with the lift sensor. If i remember correctly, it lives just in front of the radiator, jack up the front of the car and you will see a small box mounted to the left of the radiator front cross member, next to the a.b.s unit. Disconnect the plug, and replace the fuse. If all is well, remove the sensor, and shake it; if it rattles the ball bearing inside it has broken free of it's mountings, and the unit will need replacement.....

Thank you - I have been trying to chase down shorts - tough to do without wiring diagram!

Damn near impossible without a wiring diagram i would imagine!! Those sensors fail quite often. The connector has three wires in it, and the unit itself is grey aluminium. If you get stuck PM me and i'll try and dig you out a wiring diagram...

This AM my 456M decided it was going to blow the same fuse. I pulled the cover underneath the front of the car, but for the life of me I cannot locate the anti lift sensor. Anyone have a diagram or photo the can help me out with? I found a couple small ones of the part, but none that help me locate the part in relation to other things on the car.

Not sure what you are trying to track down? The lift sensor - or the leveling sensor?

My problem was a short, I bought the Factory Workshop Manual for the Wiring Diagram which cost a small fortune to no avail. The local independent took the dash and other bits out to chase the short but never found it. The problem went away, but now I have the suspension warning light which is probably due to an actuator.

I was going by what rustybits had said (Sounds like you have a problem with the lift sensor...) thinking that could be the issue. My battery light flashed and the gauges went dead so I checked the fuse (7.5) replaced and it went out again right away. I thought I could check the sensor mentioned to see if I could solve the issue, otherwise its a flatbed to the shop because with the battery light warning, I'm sure its not charging.

Jagbuff, I've got a question. If the issue just went away on its own, was there anything you related it to? Could it have been related to the radio issue you were troubleshooting? I'm just trying to see if I can solve this before calling a flatbed Monday AM!

JAM1, the sensor is located off centre (to the left) when looking under the vehicle, (you need the undertray off, make sure you release the clip on the alternator duct) just behind the radiator, approx. 3" from the front of the engine. Remove the sensor and shake it, if there's something loose inside, that's your problem. It's very common, replace the fuse and sensor and you should be away!

Thanks to rustybits! I tracked down the lift sensor and unplugged it. No more issue with the gauges going out, part ordered and hoping to be back 100% in the next few days. Thanks for the help guys!
