First time poster, long time lurker. I was curious about how prevalent the use of concrete is in residential structures (In the foundation, as well as in finishing the entire structure). Im debating the pro/cons with my father, and we cant seem to come to an accord. Im convinced the higher thermal insulating properties of concrete, and cinder block will aid in increasing the efficiency of the building, saving on HVAC related expenses in the long run. Of course, using renewable sources is a top priority Where would I be able to learn more about this subject? What are your experiences?
You do not say where in North America you may be building. The amount of thermal mass required will be dependent upon location. If above 40 degrees north latitude, best for floor structures. Walls and ceilings of other highly insulated materials.
One of the more "avant guard" design/build firms to exist in that area was Jersey Devil Architecture. An excellent retrospective has been published; Devil's Workshop, 25 years of Jersey Devil Architecture. By Susan Piedmont-Palladino & Mark Alden Branch. Published 1997 by Princeton Architectural Press.
