Ok, so I need to find an RHD SUV (which means, I believe, that the G-wagen is out), with a caveat: it'll be used in the desert and will require being shipped to another country for service.

So obviously reliability is the big factor here. A sedan with adjustable air suspension would work, but it would have to gain some decent clearance to do the trick.

The SUVs up for contention are the standard Range Rover, Cayenne S, X5 4.4i, Touareg, and G500 (if they make one in RHD). Of those, only the Benz has an authorized service center near by. (Technically so does BMW, but it is suspect at best). The others would require being shipped to a nearby country for work, or having techs flown in.

If a sedan is up to the task (7 series it out due because of a lack of adaptable suspension), it would be either the new A8, or an S320 CDi (possibly an S500). Those are the only two I can think of that lift on demand.

Based on that, what are some thoughts about reliability and use in such conditions?

Land Cruiser? Not much status, but they don't break, and won't require white coated minions from far away lands to minister to it either.
What U up to? Running brides again, or hiding bodies? :p

Land Cruisers are the highest profile / most car-jacked vehicle out there, oddly enough. It was my first consideration.

So it seems like RR service is about 300 miles away (same country), BMW is possible, and I figure I could probably get Audi done at the VW dealership?

I dont think they make G wagons in RHD anymore, There are a couple of new/newish ones near me and they're LHD (and the owners can more than afford the premium for RHD)
RR servicing should be able to be completed in any Ford or BMW or Volvo place

I remember clarkson was raving about the cayenne and it is amazing off road as well on the road. So I would consider that one if I were you.

Don't buy anything other than a Land Cruiser. If LC is high profile, they will pretty quickly pick up on Porsche/Audi/BMW/RR, so don't fool yourself. Nothing beats LC, especially in hot desert.....nothing even comes close.

Put some brush gruards on the LC and hire a trusted local or two with AK-47s, and you will be just fine. A sticker "I brake for nobody" should help. :)

A family friend owns a vw toureg with the v10 diesel and that thing can haul! Drives great to! Like a car which is nice but you still get that hauling power etc.
I believe it was on fifth gear (brit car show) they used a toureg to pull a john deere tractor weighing seven tons! As everyone has said the Land Rover's are great also. The cayenes are fast as hell but look a bit weird.

While I am not so sure about ground clearance, I would expect the Audi to do well in hot climates. They use to have a testing center in Morocco, sort of like a northern Sahara proving grounds. I think they still use that facility for all their autos.

    Ciao!

The Touareg is nice! I like them a lot, one of the very few SUVs I would buy.

Agree 100% My LC has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It will go ANYWHERE my Defender 90 could AND get me back(something the LR can't always do).

FWIW, I have a few friends in nasty parts of the world where their lives depend on the reliabilty of their vehicles. They ALL drive Land Cruisers. Also, you can get an amored LC. I've been in one and while offroad capability is diminished by the additional weight, you won't be sweating small arms fire.

I wouldn't depend on the VW to get me accross town everday, let alone if my life depended on it.

The ONLY other vehicle I would consider other than an LC for what you're talking about is MAYBE a Mercedes Unimog.

The Land Cruisers are definetly hard to beat as far as performance. State-side, I've got an LX470 (basically a land cruiser with some leather and air suspension), and the thing has easily done 160k miles w/o so much more as regular oil changes.

    Thanks for the tips!

I am sure you could find a nice Gwagen. Call Russ at Europa in New Mexico. If any are to be found, he would know.

Land cruisers are pigs. Go for the Cayenne, anyday.

I'd go for the one with armor plating and bulletproof glass.

No G-wags made in RHD for the current models.

LCs are pigs, yeah, but they work. No question.

Anyone know how the new Range Rovers are holding up after 30,40,50k+ miles?

M: cayenne is impossible to get serviced. RR I can have a tech fly down, and also the local bmw importer t olook at.

Too bad local Porsche service is a problem -- not for me!! In that case you will be forgiven. LC would be next best choice.

Dan if you are talking about Pakistan, they now make Defenders there locally with Land Rover supervision/overseers. Basically they bought the old Defender plant so BMW could make a new plant for the (then) new Range Rover.

Not bad trucks and cheap! I was thinking of getting one myself for while I am over there. But couldn't justify (right now) my own truck in a place I visit only a few weeks of the year at most.
